What is Browsh?

Browsh is a revolutionary text-based browser that overcomes the limitations of traditional CLI browsers by using headless Firefox as its rendering engine. This allows it to support CSS3, JavaScript, and even video streaming while maintaining a terminal-friendly interface. By incorporating Browsh into your Openclaw Skills library, you can empower AI agents to navigate the modern web efficiently, reducing bandwidth consumption and keeping workflows within the terminal.

Browsh Use Cases

  • Accessing web documentation and resources from remote SSH sessions.
  • Browsing the web in low-bandwidth scenarios without losing modern site functionality.
  • Automating web interactions where a graphical browser is unnecessary or unavailable.
  • Enhancing AI agent capabilities within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem for web research.

How Browsh Works

  1. The application starts a headless instance of Firefox to serve as the rendering backend.
  2. The browsh binary establishes a connection to the Firefox instance to fetch and process web content.
  3. The skill renders the graphical page as high-quality text and ANSI graphics for the terminal.
  4. Input commands are passed through to the browser, allowing for navigation and form submission in real-time.

Browsh Setup

First, ensure both the browsh and firefox binaries are installed on your system and available in your PATH. If they are installed in a custom directory like ~/apps, update your environment variables:

export PATH=$HOME/apps:$HOME/apps/firefox:$PATH

Launch the browser using browsh or specify a destination with browsh --startup-url <url>.

Browsh Data Schema & Taxonomy

Browsh acts as a bridge between the terminal and a browser engine. Its configuration and data usage follow this structure:

  • Binaries: Requires paths to both the Browsh executable and a compatible Firefox version.
  • Profiles: Utilizes temporary or persistent Firefox profiles to manage cookies and session state.
  • Display: Outputs content to a PTY session using standard ANSI escape codes for terminal rendering.
  • Parameters: Supports startup flags for initial URL and window dimensions.

Browsh Advanced Features

  • Support for modern web standards including WebGL and complex JavaScript applications.
  • Bandwidth optimization by selectively rendering content for text display.
  • Ability to handle video content via terminal graphics.
  • Seamless integration with PTY environments like tmux for multi-pane Openclaw Skills workflows.
