What is CapRover Deploy?

The CapRover Deploy skill provides a robust interface for AI agents to manage application lifecycles on CapRover servers. By integrating with Openclaw Skills, developers can trigger builds, manage CI/CD pipelines, and monitor deployment status through simple conversational commands or automated triggers.

This skill bridges the gap between development and production by supporting multiple deployment strategies, including GitHub workflow_dispatch for complex CI/CD, direct webhook triggers for lightweight rebuilds, and CapRover App Tokens for CLI-based deployments. It also assists in scaffolding the necessary configuration files like captain-definition and GitHub Action workflows for new projects.

CapRover Deploy Use Cases

  • Triggering a production deployment from a specific Git branch
  • Setting up automated CI/CD workflows for new repositories
  • Checking the real-time status of a GitHub Actions deployment run
  • Listing all deployable applications managed by the CapRover instance
  • Scaffolding deployment templates like Docker-based or tar-based workflows

How CapRover Deploy Works

  1. The skill parses the user command and matches it against the configured applications in the config.json file.
  2. It identifies the most efficient deployment strategy based on available credentials (GitHub Token, Webhook URL, or App Token).
  3. If using GitHub, it executes a POST request to the GitHub API to dispatch a workflow event.
  4. Alternatively, it triggers a CapRover webhook or uses the CapRover CLI to push code directly.
  5. The skill monitors the execution status and reports the outcome back to the user.

CapRover Deploy Setup

Install the necessary dependencies and configure your credentials in the skill directory to get started with Openclaw Skills.

npm install -g caprover

Create a config.json file with the following structure:

{
  "caprover": {
    "url": "https://captain.example.com",
    "password": "YOUR_MASTER_PASSWORD"
  },
  "github": {
    "token": "ghp_YOUR_GITHUB_PAT",
    "owner": "your-github-username"
  },
  "apps": {
    "myapp": {
      "caprover_app_name": "myapp",
      "github_repo": "your-username/myapp",
      "github_workflow": "deploy.yml",
      "default_branch": "main"
    }
  }
}

CapRover Deploy Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill relies on a centralized configuration and template system to manage deployment logic within Openclaw Skills.

Component Description
config.json Stores server URLs, master passwords, GitHub PATs, and app-specific metadata.
assets/templates/ Contains pre-configured .yml and .json templates for different deployment scenarios.
.github/workflows/ Destination for generated CI/CD pipelines in the target project repository.
captain-definition Standard CapRover configuration file generated for tar-based deployments.

CapRover Deploy Advanced Features

  • Fuzzy matching for application names to handle natural language variations
  • Multi-environment support (staging vs. production) using specific GitHub Secrets within Openclaw Skills
  • Automated scaffolding of Docker-based (GHCR) and tar-based deployment strategies
  • Support for private repository deployments via scoped GitHub Personal Access Tokens
