What is Budget Tracker?

The Budget Tracker skill provides a critical financial layer for autonomous agents that interact with paid services, APIs, and digital marketplaces. As agents gain more autonomy, the risk of unexpected billing increases; this skill mitigates that risk by providing a centralized ledger to log every transaction, enforce hard spending limits, and provide real-time balance updates.

By incorporating this skill into your Openclaw Skills library, you ensure that your agents remain fiscally responsible. It allows for granular tracking across various categories like hosting, marketing, and tool subscriptions, giving developers peace of mind that their autonomous systems will not exceed their financial constraints.

Budget Tracker Use Cases

  • Tracking real-time API and cloud infrastructure costs for autonomous deployments.
  • Preventing agents from exceeding monthly budget limits during automated tasks.
  • Auditing spending patterns across different merchants and service categories.
  • Setting safety thresholds to receive warnings before funds are depleted.

How Budget Tracker Works

  1. Set an initial budget and alert threshold to define the agent's spending boundaries.
  2. Before making a purchase, the agent calls a safety check to verify if the amount fits the remaining budget.
  3. After a transaction, the agent logs the cost, merchant, and category into the local ledger.
  4. The system automatically updates the balance and triggers alerts if the threshold is reached.
  5. Developers can generate summaries or export data to CSV for external analysis of the agent's performance.

Budget Tracker Setup

This skill requires Python 3 to be installed. Once available in your Openclaw Skills directory, you can initialize your budget using the following commands:

# Set the total budget limit
python3 scripts/budget.py set-budget --total 500.00

# Set a warning threshold
python3 scripts/budget.py set-alert --threshold 100.00

# Check the current balance
python3 scripts/budget.py balance

Budget Tracker Data Schema & Taxonomy

Budget information is stored locally in a JSON format at ~/.openclaw/budget-tracker/budget.json. The schema includes:

  • budget: Contains the total limit and the alert threshold.
  • transactions: A list of transaction objects including ID, timestamp, amount, merchant, and category.
Property Type Description
amount Float The cost of the transaction
merchant String The entity receiving the payment
category String Classification (e.g., api, hosting, tool)
timestamp ISO8601 When the expense occurred

Budget Tracker Advanced Features

  • Transaction blocking: Automatically prevents an agent from spending if it would exceed the remaining budget.
  • CSV Export: Generate formatted reports for external bookkeeping or review.
  • Safety Check Logic: A dedicated 'check' command for agents to use as a conditional logic gate before executing financial actions.
  • Multi-category tracking: Support for predefined categories like domain, hosting, api, and marketing for organized accounting.
