What is Build Protocol?

The Build Protocol is an advanced orchestration skill designed to transform chaotic long-form content generation into a highly disciplined, machine-verified engineering workflow. Ideal for producing multi-chapter AI/ML textbooks, deep technical reports, and comprehensive knowledge bases, this protocol addresses the inherent limitations of standard LLM tasks—such as context drift, degradation, and sycophantic bias—by enforcing rigorous operational rules. When integrated within Openclaw Skills, it provides a deterministic framework for multi-agent coordination, ensuring that complex writing tasks are executed systematically and safely.

At its core, the protocol utilizes an independent auditing system, a strict plan-before-execute mandate, and a maximum of two parallel writing sub-agents to avoid concurrency bottlenecks and synchronization failures. By treating documentation as a software-like build pipeline complete with machine-verified quality gates and automated check scripts, developers and content creators can reliably ship long-form assets that are functionally accurate, consistently formatted, and free of typical LLM hallucinations.

Build Protocol Use Cases

  • Long-Form Knowledge Base Creation: When you need to build comprehensive wikis, documentation databases, or technical repositories exceeding 5,000 words.
  • Multi-Agent Collaborative Writing: Situations requiring more than 2 parallel sub-agents or complex multi-step generation phases where logical drift must be minimized.
  • Academic and Textbook Production: Drafting textbooks, research papers, or deep industry reports that demand rigorous validation like PMID citations and structured layout verification.
  • Long-Term Reference Documentation: Building strategic guidelines, internal playbooks, or product design docs (PRDs) that users will continuously reference.
  • Automated Quality Auditing: Ensuring AI-generated content undergoes strict, independent anti-sycophancy assessments and formatting compliance before publication.

How Build Protocol Works

  1. Plan: Draft an initial outline, allocate specific tasks to sub-agents, and provide realistic time estimates.
  2. Prepare: Extract relevant content chunks, limiting instructions and context to a maximum of 3,000 characters per sub-agent task.
  3. Execute: Dispatch up to two parallel writing sub-agents with a jittered start to avoid API region throttling.
  4. Assemble: Merge generated markdown files, resolve formatting inconsistencies, and clean up stray progress markers.
  5. Review: Conduct a lightweight manual or script-assisted review to check for formatting errors and dirty structural markers.
  6. Audit: Execute a deep independent audit examining factual accuracy (L1), safety compliance (L4), and anti-sycophancy ratios (L6).
  7. Fix: Address identified issues sequentially, prioritizing critical blockers (red) over warnings (yellow) and info items (green).
  8. Publish: Convert clean output to the target format (such as docx or markdown), upload, and run confirmation scripts.
  9. Errata: Log subsequent revisions and feedback into a version-controlled changelog to keep the codebase clean.

Build Protocol Setup

To implement the Build Protocol within your Openclaw Skills workspace, install the script template and organize your directory structure.

1. Structure Your Workspace

Create the required directories in your project root:

mkdir -p references HistoryBackup docs

2. Configure the Audit Script

Place your custom audit script at references/audit-check.sh to enforce quality gates during execution:

#!/bin/bash
# Verify H1 headers (exactly 1 per file)
H1_COUNT=$(grep -c '^# ' docs/*.md)
if [ "$H1_COUNT" -ne 1 ]; then
echo "[ERROR] Multiple H1 tags found!"
  exit 1
fi
echo "[SUCCESS] Basic markdown checks passed!"

Make it executable:

chmod +x references/audit-check.sh

3. Load the Skill

Add the build-protocol skill to your environment configuration to enable automatic triggers on keywords like 'build knowledge base' or 'write textbook'.

Build Protocol Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Build Protocol standardizes data organization across the repository to ensure reproducibility and version safety. The workspace directory structure is defined as follows:

Directory / File Description Output Type
references/workflow-checkpoints.md Contains completion criteria for each of the 9 phases. Markdown
references/audit-script-template.sh Bash script containing quantitative evaluation filters. Shell Script
references/subagent-spec-examples.md Standard templates for task dispatching. Markdown
HistoryBackup/ Archives of older major/minor versions to preserve history. Subfolders
docs/ Active workspace containing the final compiled document. Markdown / DOCX

Versioning Taxonomy

  • Minor Update (+0.1): Undergo up to 3 minor adjustments per 5k words without major structural shifts.
  • Major Update (+1.0): Triggered by architectural changes, addition of 3+ chapters, or expanding text by over 50k words.

Build Protocol Advanced Features

  • Multi-Agent Anti-Sycophancy Gates: Integrates quantitative evaluations checking for the presence of constructive critical items to ensure the AI review isn't falsely giving "all-green" reports.
  • Machine-Verified Citation Auditing: Automated validation of academic sources, verifying PMID citation thresholds and ensuring duplicate-free bibliographies.
  • Throttling Jitter Mitigation: Built-in 1-3 second staggered dispatch rules for sub-agents to bypass concurrent rate limits in high-density API regions.
  • Deterministic Workspace Fallbacks: Comprehensive recovery plans for timeout failures, allowing seamless transition from sub-agent automated review to main-agent scripted fallbacks.
  • Changelog and Errata Iteration: Strict adherence to software-grade version increments to build trust and preserve deep context history within your Openclaw Skills deployment.
