What is Cashbook?

Cashbook is a robust personal bookkeeping tool designed for users who prioritize data sovereignty and ease of use. As part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it leverages a local SQLite database to ensure your financial data remains entirely under your control. The skill bridges the gap between manual entry and automation by allowing users to record transactions through natural language descriptions or by simply uploading screenshots of receipts and payment confirmations.

Beyond simple expense tracking, Cashbook provides a complete suite of financial management tools. It handles multiple account types, categorizes spending automatically (with support for English, Chinese, and Japanese), and generates detailed weekly or monthly reports. Whether you are importing years of data from CSV files or setting strict monthly budgets, this skill transforms your AI agent into a sophisticated personal accountant.

Cashbook Use Cases

  • Recording daily expenses using natural language commands like "spent $15 on lunch"
  • Converting payment screenshots from WeChat, Alipay, or POS receipts into structured ledger entries
  • Managing multiple financial accounts including debit cards, credit cards, and digital wallets
  • Setting and monitoring monthly spending limits for specific categories or overall budget
  • Generating automated financial health reports with ASCII visualizations for quick insights
  • Migrating historical data from banking platforms via CSV import functionality

How Cashbook Works

  1. Data Initialization: Upon first run, the skill automatically creates a local SQLite database and prompts the user to set up a default account.
  2. Input Processing: The user provides input via text or image. For text, the skill extracts structured fields (amount, category, date, note) using NLP. For images, it uses vision tools to parse merchant and payment details.
  3. User Confirmation: Extracted data is presented to the user for verification or modification before any permanent record is created.
  4. Ledger Entry: Once confirmed, the transaction is written to the local database, and account balances are updated in real-time.
  5. Reporting and Analysis: The skill queries the database to provide summaries, budget status, or exportable CSV reports based on user-defined time periods.

Cashbook Setup

Prerequisites

Ensure your environment is ready for Openclaw Skills development.

Initialize Default Account

# Add a default wallet nickname
python3 scripts/account.py add --nickname "Default Wallet" --type wallet

# Set it as the primary account
python3 scripts/account.py default --id 1

Database Location

By default, data is stored at ~/.local/share/cashbook/cashbook.db. You can override this by setting the CASHBOOK_DB environment variable.

Cashbook Data Schema & Taxonomy

Cashbook organizes data into several core tables to maintain financial integrity:

Table Description
Transactions Stores amount, type (income/expense), category, account ID, and timestamps.
Accounts Tracks nicknames, account types (debit/credit/wallet), and current balances.
Budgets Records monthly limits per category or for total spending.
Categories Maintains a mapping of preset and custom spending/income classifications.

Cashbook Advanced Features

  • Multilingual Category Mapping: Supports aliases (e.g., mapping "food" to "餐饮") for seamless cross-language entry.
  • Dry-Run Import: Preview CSV data imports without writing to the database to ensure mapping accuracy.
  • Privacy Protection: Strictly avoids storing sensitive data like full card numbers, CVVs, or passwords.
  • Batch Processing: Ability to process and confirm multiple receipt screenshots in a single workflow.
  • Automated Rollbacks: Deleting a transaction automatically reverts the associated account balance to its previous state.
