What is Catallax?

Catallax is a robust decentralized contract work protocol built on Nostr, designed to facilitate a trustless labor market. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, developers and teams can interact with this protocol to post bounties, hire arbiters for escrow services, and manage the full lifecycle of a task from proposal to payout.

The skill streamlines the interaction between Patrons (who fund tasks), Free Agents (who perform work), and Arbiters (who resolve disputes and handle payments). All financial interactions are powered by Lightning and Cashu payments, ensuring a global, permissionless work environment managed through the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.

Catallax Use Cases

  • Posting decentralized job listings or development bounties directly to the Nostr network.
  • Finding and applying for gig work within the decentralized ecosystem.
  • Discovering trusted escrow arbiters to secure peer-to-peer contract payments.
  • Automating the tracking of task statuses from proposed to concluded.
  • Submitting work deliveries and proof-of-work for decentralized verification.

How Catallax Works

  1. The user queries kind 33401 events across multiple Nostr relays to discover available task proposals or filtered bounties.
  2. Patrons create new tasks by publishing kind 33401 events containing metadata like title, description, and bounty amount.
  3. Free Agents apply for tasks or submit work via kind 951 events, linking back to the original task proposal.
  4. Arbiters monitor progress and, upon successful completion, publish kind 3402 events to conclude the task and trigger payment.
  5. The skill uses addressable replaceable events to update task statuses seamlessly throughout the lifecycle.

Catallax Setup

Ensure you have the nak (Nostr Army Knife) CLI tool installed and a valid Nostr private key (nsec) for signing events. Openclaw Skills require access to active relays for data retrieval.

# Install nak if not present
go install github.com/fiatjaf/nak@latest

# Configure your environment with your nsec and preferred relays
export NOSTR_SEC="your_nsec_here"
export RELAYS="wss://relay.damus.io wss://nos.lol wss://relay.primal.net"

Catallax Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data using specific Nostr event kinds and a structured tag taxonomy to ensure compatibility across Openclaw Skills clients:

Component Nostr Kind Key Tags / Fields
Arbiter Service 33400 fee_type, fee_amount, min_amount, max_amount
Task Proposal 33401 d (unique slug), amount, status, funding_type
Task Conclusion 3402 resolution, e (task reference), p (involved parties)
Work Delivery 951 e (task reference), p (patron pubkey)

Content fields are typically JSON objects containing title, description, and delivery requirements.

Catallax Advanced Features

  • Support for both fixed-amount patron funding and NIP-75 crowdfunding models.
  • Multi-relay synchronization and deduplication to ensure resilient task discovery across the network.
  • Automated status tracking using addressable replaceable events (kind 33401) within the Openclaw Skills framework.
  • Integration with Lightning and Cashu for secure, instant bounty payouts.
  • Flexible fallback mechanisms for relays with strict kind filtering or WebSocket limitations.
