What is ClassLink?

The ClassLink skill for Openclaw Skills enables AI agents to seamlessly interact with the ClassLink single sign-on platform. Primarily used in K-12 education, this integration allows developers and educators to automate data management across Users, Apps, and Roster records. By leveraging the Membrane framework, this skill removes the complexity of manual authentication, providing a secure bridge between AI agents and educational resources.

This skill is designed for high-efficiency environments where educational app access and data synchronization are paramount. It simplifies the process of interacting with the OneRoster API, allowing agents to query school data without the overhead of managing OAuth tokens or complex API headers manually.

ClassLink Use Cases

  • Synchronizing student roster data between ClassLink and external educational tools.
  • Automating the management of user permissions and application access for K-12 schools.
  • Querying specific classroom or teacher records via natural language through AI agents.
  • Building custom administrative dashboards that pull live data from the ClassLink portal.

How ClassLink Works

  1. The Openclaw Skills agent initializes the Membrane CLI to establish a secure session.
  2. A connection is ensured using the ClassLink domain, where Membrane handles the background OAuth handshake.
  3. The agent searches for specific actions (like fetching rosters) based on the user's natural language intent.
  4. Actions are executed via the CLI, with Membrane automatically injecting required credentials and handling pagination.
  5. If a specific endpoint is required that isn't a pre-built action, the agent uses the proxy request feature to communicate directly with the ClassLink API.

ClassLink Setup

First, install the Membrane CLI globally to enable Openclaw Skills capabilities:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your agent by specifying the client type:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Create a connection to the ClassLink environment:

membrane connection ensure "https://www.classlink.com/" --json

ClassLink Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes ClassLink data into logical entities focused on the educational ecosystem:

Entity Description
User Profiles for students, teachers, and administrators.
App Metadata regarding educational applications available in the portal.
Roster Classroom structures and enrollment information.
OneRoster API Standardized data formats for school information systems.

All responses can be toggled to --json format for structured parsing by AI agents.

ClassLink Advanced Features

  • Automatic Token Refresh: Never worry about session timeouts; Openclaw Skills manage credential lifecycles server-side.
  • Natural Language Action Discovery: Use the --intent flag to find the right API capability without reading documentation.
  • Transparent Proxy: Send raw HTTP requests to specialized ClassLink endpoints while Membrane handles the security headers.
  • Long-polling Status: Use the --wait flag to handle asynchronous connection building automatically.
