What is claudemem?

claudemem is a specialized tool designed to solve the common problem of context loss between AI chat sessions. By integrating with Openclaw Skills, this skill allows your coding agent to automatically capture and retrieve knowledge fragments such as API rate limits, technical architecture decisions, and resolved bug roots.

It operates entirely locally, ensuring that your sensitive project data remains private while providing a high-performance experience. With sub-10ms search capabilities using a SQLite FTS5 index, this Openclaw Skills extension transforms your agent from a stateless assistant into a long-term collaborator that remembers your specific project conventions and past workflows.

claudemem Use Cases

  • Documenting and recalling specific API specifications or integration quirks identified during development.
  • Maintaining a persistent log of technical decisions and their underlying rationale to ensure consistency across the codebase.
  • Automatically generating structured session summaries to help you pick up exactly where you left off.
  • Capturing project-specific environment configurations and user preferences without repetitive manual entry.

How claudemem Works

  1. The agent monitors the conversation for evergreen knowledge such as API specs, resolved bugs, or configuration requirements.
  2. Upon identifying key information, the agent performs a silent search within the Openclaw Skills memory to check for duplicates.
  3. New information is saved as a Markdown note with metadata, or appended to existing relevant notes to keep context unified.
  4. At the beginning of new tasks, the agent proactively queries the local database to retrieve context that may inform the current work.
  5. Using the wrap-up command, the agent generates a comprehensive session summary including key decisions, file changes, and next steps.

claudemem Setup

To get started with this skill in your Openclaw Skills environment, verify the CLI is installed. You can install it using the following bash command:

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/zelinewang/claudemem/main/skills/claudemem/scripts/install.sh | bash

Once installed, verify the setup by checking the version:

claudemem --version

Data Type Storage Format Location
Notes Markdown with YAML frontmatter ~/.claudemem/notes/
Sessions Structured Markdown summaries ~/.claudemem/sessions/
Search Index SQLite FTS5 (Rebuildable) ~/.claudemem/index.db
Configuration Local Config File ~/.claudemem/config

claudemem Advanced Features

  • Natural language activation allows you to trigger memory operations using phrases like keep this in mind or what did we do last time.
  • Autonomous proactive saving captures technical details silently during the conversation without interrupting your workflow.
  • Data portability features include full export and import commands for easy backups or migrating your Openclaw Skills context to new machines.
