What is Desktop Pet Workshop?

Desktop Pet Workshop is a utility within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem designed to transition standard photos into fully interactive, animated desktop mascots. The skill utilizes advanced AI subject detection and segmentation to isolate background elements with high precision. It then applies a styled Q-version cute makeover, preserves key identifying features of the pet or character, and generates multiple loopable action frames.

Once the assets are prepared, the system binds them to an Electron-based application framework. This wraps the interactive animations, tray menus, hover events, and system click actions into native executables (.exe for Windows or .dmg for macOS), offering a complete asset-to-application automation pipeline.

Desktop Pet Workshop Use Cases

  • Transform a photo of a personal pet into a functional, animated desktop companion that reacts to user input.
  • Standardize custom mascot creation for desktop applications or brand promotions using AI-driven asset generation.
  • Streamline background extraction, cartoon styling, and sprite-sheet rendering of characters into a single automated pipeline.
  • Create customized interactive desktop widgets for personal use or distributed user applications.

How Desktop Pet Workshop Works

  1. Input Alignment: The skill receives a user-provided image and parses optional configuration parameters such as desired style modifiers, specific actions, or targeted operating systems.
  2. Subject Extraction: Utilizes the ImageGen tool to identify the core visual subject, performing clean background removal to output an asset with an Alpha transparent channel.
  3. Visual Styling: Converts the extracted asset into a polished Q-style illustration while retaining the distinct markings and color palettes of the original subject.
  4. Motion Frame Generation: Renders a suite of five loopable character animations (including idle, happy jump, soft nudge, dozing, and waving) with consistent spatial dimensions.
  5. Interaction Mapping: Configures logical rules for action triggers based on user mouse inputs (such as click triggers, hover loops, and inactivity timeouts) into a structured config.json schema.
  6. App Packaging: Runs a build script that injects the styled assets and configuration into an Electron template, resolving platform dependencies to compile a native .exe or .dmg installer.

Desktop Pet Workshop Setup

Ensure that you have Node.js (v18 or higher) installed on your local system before setting up this skill.

Clone the repository and install the initial packaging templates:

git clone https://github.com/HaixuMa/desktop-pet-workshop.git
cd desktop-pet-workshop
npm install

To build the installer package directly from generated assets, execute the packaging script with the path to your assets directory:

node scripts/build_installer.js <assets_directory> <output_directory> --os auto

Note: Due to compilation toolchain requirements, Windows packages (.exe) must be compiled on a Windows host, and macOS packages (.dmg) must be compiled on macOS.

Desktop Pet Workshop Data Schema & Taxonomy

The workspace organization and target application structure are formatted according to the following file layout:

Directory / File Description Output Details
assets/desktop-pet-template/ Core Electron application boilerplate Template package files
assets/desktop-pet-template/src/config.json Generated interaction mapping and states Action mappings
pet-assets/ Target location for transparent PNG sequence files 128x128 to 256x256 pixel assets
scripts/build_installer.js Compilation and packaging runner script Calls electron-builder
references/default_actions.md Configuration definitions and reference specifications Master action reference

Desktop Pet Workshop Advanced Features

  • Interactive Input Triggers: Defines unique animations for mouse hover actions, click reactions, and automated inactivity sequences (such as sleeping after 30 seconds of system idle time).
  • Automated Electron Builder Integration: Integrates directly with electron-builder to generate production-ready executables complete with frameless transparent windows and tray-based control menus.
  • Customizable Action Mapping: Supports dynamic action expansions through modular config.json edits, allowing users to inject custom loop behaviors or extended state machines.
  • CI/CD Compatibility: Configurable to run headlessly inside virtualized containers or GitHub Actions pipelines to bypass local platform compiling limits.
