What is Device Connectivity?

Device Connectivity is an Openclaw Skills integration for pairing a mobile phone with a Linux desktop using KDE Connect-compatible implementations. It enables file sharing, notification synchronization, clipboard sharing, media control, virtual touchpad input, device discovery, and other phone-to-desktop workflows.

The skill supports native KDE Connect, Valent, and GSConnect. Valent is the recommended option for Fedora Atomic, bootc, and other immutable Linux systems because it provides a straightforward Flatpak installation and works across Wayland compositors without requiring a GNOME Shell extension.

Device Connectivity Use Cases

  • Pair an Android phone with a Linux workstation for wireless file transfers.
  • Connect an iPhone or iPad to Linux using the KDE Connect for iOS application.
  • Synchronize phone notifications with a Linux desktop.
  • Share clipboard content between mobile and desktop devices.
  • Control desktop media playback from a phone.
  • Use a phone as a virtual touchpad or remote input device.
  • Configure phone connectivity on Fedora Atomic, bootc, or other immutable distributions.
  • Troubleshoot device discovery, firewall access, port conflicts, or incompatible KDE Connect installations.

How Device Connectivity Works

  1. Select a KDE Connect-compatible implementation based on the Linux environment: native KDE Connect, Valent Flatpak, or GSConnect for GNOME Shell.
  2. Install the selected implementation, with Valent recommended for Fedora Atomic and other immutable systems.
  3. Ensure the Linux firewall permits KDE Connect discovery and communication traffic, especially UDP and TCP port 1716 and TCP ports 1739 through 1764.
  4. Launch the desktop service so it runs as a background daemon with its pairing interface.
  5. Install the official KDE Connect mobile application on Android, F-Droid, or iOS.
  6. Confirm that both devices are on a reachable network and allow device discovery through the KDE Connect protocol.
  7. Accept the pairing request on the phone and Linux desktop.
  8. Enable the desired capabilities, such as file sharing, notifications, clipboard synchronization, media control, or remote input.
  9. Keep only one KDE Connect-compatible desktop implementation active because KDE Connect and Valent both claim port 1716.

Device Connectivity Setup

Valent is the practical Openclaw Skills setup for Fedora Atomic, bootc, and other immutable Linux systems. KDE Connect is not available on Flathub, and the documented KDE Flatpak repository may be unreliable.

flatpak install --user -y --from https://valent.andyholmes.ca/valent.flatpakref

Open firewall ports when required

FedoraWorkstation commonly permits the required port range through its default zone. If the active interface uses the public zone, add the KDE Connect ports:

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=1716/tcp --add-port=1716/udp
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=1739-1764/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

Check the active firewall zone with:

sudo firewall-cmd --get-active-zones

Launch Valent

flatpak run ca.andyholmes.Valent

Then install the official KDE Connect app on the phone, discover the Linux desktop, and approve the pairing request. Stop any running KDE Connect process before launching Valent to avoid a port 1716 conflict.

Device Connectivity Data Schema & Taxonomy

Operational metadata

Field Value
Skill name device-connectivity
Supported host OS Linux
Protocol KDE Connect
Mobile platforms Android and iOS
Recommended immutable-system implementation Valent Flatpak
Alternative implementations Native KDE Connect and GSConnect

Network ports

Port Protocol Function
1716 UDP Device discovery broadcasts
1716 TCP Pairing, primary connection, and commands
1739-1764 TCP Auxiliary streams such as file transfers

The skill does not define an application-specific database, generated document format, or custom export files. Device state is managed by the selected KDE Connect-compatible implementation and its desktop and mobile applications. Valent uses Flatpak-managed application data and requires system D-Bus access to services such as BlueZ, Avahi, ModemManager, UPower, and login1 for protocol features.

Device Connectivity Advanced Features

  • Cross-platform protocol compatibility allows Valent to pair with the official KDE Connect Android, F-Droid, and iOS applications.
  • Wayland support works across niri, sway, river, GNOME, and KDE environments.
  • Valent runs as a background daemon while exposing a graphical pairing interface.
  • Flatpak deployment supports immutable Linux systems without relying on native package managers.
  • KDE Connect protocol features include file transfer, notification synchronization, clipboard sharing, media control, remote commands, and virtual touchpad input.
  • Firewall-aware setup documents discovery, pairing, command, and auxiliary transfer ports.
  • Bluetooth and local-network capabilities are supported through required D-Bus integrations with BlueZ, Avahi, ModemManager, UPower, and login1.
  • Openclaw Skills users can choose the implementation that best matches their desktop environment instead of requiring a single Linux distribution or window manager.
