What is email-otp?

The Email OTP skill is a robust utility designed for developers and automated agents who need to handle email-based authentication programmatically. By leveraging the mail.tm API, it allows users to create disposable email identities without requiring an API key. This Openclaw Skills extension is particularly valuable for bypassing the manual step of checking an inbox during account creation or testing workflows.

Beyond just receiving mail, the skill intelligently parses incoming messages to extract common authentication tokens, such as 4-8 digit codes and activation URLs. It operates entirely through a CLI interface, making it a perfect fit for CI/CD pipelines, automated testing suites, and complex agentic workflows within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.

email-otp Use Cases

  • Automated user registration testing for web applications where email verification is mandatory.
  • Creating disposable accounts to maintain privacy and avoid spam on secondary services.
  • Programmatic monitoring of inboxes for multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes during script execution.
  • Seamless extraction of activation links to complete sign-up processes without human intervention.

How email-otp Works

  1. The skill initializes a temporary account via the mail.tm REST API and generates a secure JWT token for authentication.
  2. Account details and credentials are saved locally in a restricted state directory to maintain persistence across sessions.
  3. The user provides the generated temporary email address to a third-party service's registration form.
  4. The check command initiates a polling process that monitors the inbox at defined intervals.
  5. When an email arrives, the skill applies regex patterns to identify OTP codes or filters HTML to find relevant validation links.
  6. Extracted data is saved to specific state files (last_otp or last_link), allowing subsequent steps in an automation to consume the values.

email-otp Setup

To start using this skill within your Openclaw Skills environment, use the following commands:

# Create a new temporary email address
python3 scripts/tempmail_otp.py create

# Wait for and extract an OTP code (5-minute default timeout)
python3 scripts/tempmail_otp.py check --once

# View current account status and inbox history
python3 scripts/tempmail_otp.py list

email-otp Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages its state within the ~/.tempmail_otp/ directory using the following file structure:

File Format Description
account.json JSON Contains the email address, password, and JWT bearer token.
last_otp Plain Text The most recently detected numeric verification code.
last_link Plain Text The first relevant validation or confirmation URL found.

All files are created with 0600 permissions to ensure sensitive account tokens remain secure.

email-otp Advanced Features

  • Custom Regex Support: Use the --pattern flag to define specific matching rules for unique OTP formats.
  • Domain Selection: Choose from various available domains to bypass potential filters on common temporary email providers.
  • Targeted Monitoring: Filter incoming mail by sender or subject line to ensure only the correct verification email is processed.
  • Headless Integration: Utilize the --json flag to receive structured output for direct consumption by other Openclaw Skills components.
  • Noise Filtering: Automatically ignores tracking pixels, image files, and unsubscribe links to isolate the primary call-to-action.
