What is FormatGate?

FormatGate is a specialized utility designed to bridge the gap between different data serialization formats. As a key component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it provides a reliable API-driven interface for converting content across JSON, YAML, and TOML without losing structural integrity. It is particularly useful for AI agents and developers who need to normalize configuration files or data streams on the fly while maintaining round-trip safety.

By exposing a clean FastAPI endpoint, FormatGate allows automated workflows to ingest data in one format and output it in another, making it an essential tool for cross-platform integration and configuration management.

FormatGate Use Cases

  • Normalizing configuration files across different development environments.
  • Converting complex JSON API responses into YAML for improved human readability.
  • Translating TOML manifests into JSON for programmatic processing within Openclaw Skills.
  • Automating data transformation tasks in CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ensuring round-trip consistency when editing configuration files across different toolchains.

How FormatGate Works

  1. The user or agent sends a POST request to the local FormatGate server at the /v1/convert endpoint.
  2. The request payload includes the raw content string, the input format, and the desired output format.
  3. FormatGate validates the input using Pydantic models to ensure the data is well-formed.
  4. The engine parses the source format and re-serializes it into the target format using specialized libraries.
  5. The server returns a structured JSON response containing the converted result or specific error details if the input was invalid.

FormatGate Setup

To get started with this skill, ensure you have Python installed and run the following commands:

# Install required dependencies
uv pip install fastapi uvicorn pydantic pyyaml

# Start the FormatGate server
uvicorn formatgate.app:app --port 8008

FormatGate Data Schema & Taxonomy

FormatGate uses a strictly typed schema to ensure data integrity across Openclaw Skills integrations:

Parameter Type Description
content String The raw data string to be converted.
input_format String The format of the source data (json, yaml, or toml).
output_format String The target format for the result (json, yaml, or toml).
success Boolean Indicates if the conversion was successful.
result String The converted data string.
error String Contains error details if the conversion fails.

FormatGate Advanced Features

  • Support for all six conversion directions between JSON, YAML, and TOML.
  • Round-trip safe processing to prevent data degradation during multiple conversions.
  • Built-in error reporting for debugging malformed input strings.
  • Lightweight FastAPI architecture optimized for low-latency local execution within Openclaw Skills environments.
  • Easy integration with curl and other CLI tools for rapid testing.
