What is gh-envcheck?

EnvCheck serves as a vital infrastructure component for developers and automated systems working with AI agents. It provides a standardized API to perform pre-flight checks, ensuring that all necessary dependencies—such as specific environment variables and CLI binaries—are correctly configured before a workflow begins. This utility is designed to integrate seamlessly into the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, helping to prevent runtime errors caused by missing paths or unset configuration keys.

By exposing a simple FastAPI-based endpoint, EnvCheck allows agents or shell scripts to programmatically confirm system readiness. This is particularly useful in multi-agent environments or containerized setups where environment parity is essential for consistent performance across different nodes.

gh-envcheck Use Cases

  • Verifying system dependencies before launching complex Openclaw Skills workflows.
  • Automated environment auditing during CI/CD pipeline execution.
  • Programmatic health checks for containerized AI agent environments.
  • Dynamic dependency resolution when paired with static analysis tools like ScopeCheck.

How gh-envcheck Works

  1. The user or an automated supervisor starts the EnvCheck server on a designated port.
  2. A POST request is sent to the /v1/check-env endpoint containing a JSON payload of required_env and required_bins.
  3. The skill checks the local OS environment for the existence of the specified keys.
  4. The skill attempts to locate the specified binaries within the system PATH.
  5. A structured JSON response is returned containing a ready boolean and detailed lists of present and missing requirements.

gh-envcheck Setup

To get started with this utility, ensure you have python installed and then set up the server:

# Install required dependencies
uv pip install fastapi uvicorn pydantic

# Start the EnvCheck server
uvicorn envcheck.app:app --port 8007

You can then test the environment using curl:

curl -s -X POST http://localhost:8007/v1/check-env \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"required_env": ["HOME", "PATH"], "required_bins": ["python", "git"]}' | jq

gh-envcheck Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill returns a structured JSON object to help orchestrators decide whether to proceed with Openclaw Skills execution:

Property Type Description
ready Boolean True if every required environment variable and binary is found.
present_env Array A list of environment variables successfully detected.
missing_env Array A list of environment variables that were requested but not found.
present_bins Array A list of CLI binaries found on the system PATH.
missing_bins Array A list of CLI binaries missing from the system PATH.

gh-envcheck Advanced Features

  • Intelligent pairing with ScopeCheck to automatically extract requirements from SKILL.md files and verify them in real-time.
  • High-performance FastAPI backend suitable for high-frequency environment polling.
  • Pydantic-validated request/response models for robust integration with other Openclaw Skills.
  • CLI-friendly output that integrates perfectly with jq for shell-based automation scripts.
