What is gifgrep?

gifgrep is an essential addition to your toolkit when using Openclaw Skills for media management. It bridges the gap between web-based GIF providers and the local development environment by providing a robust CLI and TUI. Users can quickly query Tenor or Giphy, browse results with rich terminal previews, and automate the retrieval of media assets for documentation, pull requests, or communication platforms. It excels at turning dynamic GIF content into static assets like stills or contact sheets, making it a versatile tool for developers and content creators alike.

By integrating gifgrep into your workflow, you leverage the power of Openclaw Skills to streamline asset discovery. Whether you need a specific reaction GIF for a Slack message or a frame-by-frame breakdown for technical documentation, this tool provides the necessary precision and speed through a developer-centric interface.

gifgrep Use Cases

  • Searching for reaction GIFs directly from the terminal during development.
  • Generating sprite sheets (contact sheets) for quick review of GIF animations in pull requests.
  • Extracting high-quality still frames from GIF files for documentation or blog posts.
  • Automating the download of GIF assets via scripts using JSON output.
  • Browsing GIF libraries using a TUI without leaving the command line.

How gifgrep Works

  1. Initialize a search against Tenor or Giphy using specific keywords through the CLI.
  2. Optionally enter a TUI mode for interactive browsing and visual selection of GIFs.
  3. Download selected GIFs directly to the local file system, defaulting to the Downloads folder.
  4. Process local or remote GIF files to extract specific timestamps as PNG stills.
  5. Compile multiple frames into a grid-based sprite sheet for comprehensive visual analysis.

gifgrep Setup

To begin using this tool with Openclaw Skills, you can install it via Homebrew or Go:

# Install using Homebrew
brew install steipete/tap/gifgrep

# Install using Go
go install github.com/steipete/gifgrep/cmd/gifgrep@latest

For Giphy support, ensure you set your environment variable:

export GIPHY_API_KEY='your_api_key_here'

gifgrep Data Schema & Taxonomy

gifgrep leverages structured data to interface with other Openclaw Skills. When using the --json flag, it returns an array of objects with the following structure:

Field Description
id Unique identifier from the provider
title The descriptive title of the GIF
url Direct link to the source GIF file
preview_url Link to a smaller preview version for TUI/Web
tags Array of keywords associated with the GIF
width / height Dimensional metadata of the asset

Downloads are stored in ~/Downloads by default, and generated stills or sheets are output as PNG files.

gifgrep Advanced Features

  • Support for high-resolution TUI previews on compatible terminals like Kitty and Ghostty.
  • Customizable sprite sheet generation with control over frame count, column count, and padding.
  • JSON and formatted pipe-friendly output for seamless integration with tools like jq.
  • Flexible provider selection including auto-detection or manual overrides for Tenor and Giphy.
  • Environment-level rendering tweaks for software animation and cell aspect ratio adjustments.
