What is Google Chat Messaging?

This skill provides a robust framework for integrating Google Chat into your automated workflows. Whether you need to push fast notifications to a DevOps channel or programmatically interact with specific users via OAuth, this tool offers the flexibility required for modern team environments. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, developers can bridge the gap between their codebase and communication platforms, ensuring real-time visibility into system events.

The skill supports two primary modes of operation: Webhooks for high-speed, bot-style notifications in pre-configured channels, and OAuth 2.0 for dynamic interaction with spaces and users. This dual-approach ensures that you can scale from simple build-status alerts to complex, user-aware messaging systems without switching tools.

Google Chat Messaging Use Cases

  • Sending automated deployment notifications to engineering channels.
  • Generating real-time alerts for system failures or security events.
  • Programmatic direct messaging to users regarding task updates or report readiness.
  • Organizing related notifications into threads for better conversation tracking.
  • Dynamic discovery of chat spaces for multi-tenant or multi-project reporting.

How Google Chat Messaging Works

  1. The user identifies the required delivery method: Webhooks for static bot-like messages or OAuth for dynamic user-driven messaging.
  2. For Webhooks, the skill references a configuration file to retrieve the space-specific URL and sends a POST request with the text or card payload.
  3. For OAuth, the skill utilizes Google Cloud credentials to authenticate and authorize the message delivery.
  4. The script identifies the target destination using either a space name or a specific space ID.
  5. The message is delivered to Google Chat, optionally utilizing threading keys to group messages within the UI.

Google Chat Messaging Setup

First, install the required Python dependencies to enable Openclaw Skills functionality:

pip install google-auth-oauthlib google-auth-httplib2 google-api-python-client

For Webhook setup, create a google-chat-config.json containing your space URLs. For OAuth setup, you must enable the Google Chat API in the Google Cloud Console, create an OAuth 2.0 Client ID (Desktop app), and save the credentials as google-chat-oauth-credentials.json.

Google Chat Messaging Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages configuration and session data through the following file structure:

File Description
google-chat-config.json Stores mapping of space names to webhook URLs.
google-chat-oauth-credentials.json Official Google Cloud OAuth 2.0 client secret and ID.
google-chat-token.json Local storage for the active OAuth session token.
scripts/send_webhook.py Python logic for executing webhook-based delivery.
scripts/send_oauth.py Python logic for authenticated API messaging.

Google Chat Messaging Advanced Features

  • Support for complex CardV2 formatting to create interactive UI elements with buttons and headers.
  • Intelligent message threading using unique thread keys to maintain context in busy spaces.
  • Dynamic space discovery allowing the skill to list and identify rooms at runtime.
  • Custom emoji prefixing for bot-initiated messages to improve visibility.
  • Flexible CLI arguments to toggle between direct messages (DMs) and space-wide announcements.
