What is Group Activation?

Group Activation provides a structured workflow for AI agents to participate in group messaging environments like WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal. This Openclaw Skills component allows users to summon an agent into a specific conversation for a defined duration, after which the agent automatically reverts to a passive state.

It manages the technical bridge between private configuration and public interaction, ensuring the agent remains responsive without overwhelming the chat. By patching configuration files in real-time and utilizing hot-reloading, this skill enables seamless integration into existing team workflows without requiring system restarts.

Group Activation Use Cases

  • Summoning an AI expert into a WhatsApp project group for a quick 30-minute brainstorming session.
  • Activating a Telegram bot to monitor and summarize a high-traffic discussion during a specific event window.
  • Allowing an agent to provide technical support in a Signal group chat while ensuring it doesn't respond to every unrelated message.
  • Temporarily enabling agent participation in community threads when specifically tagged by the owner.

How Group Activation Works

  1. Capture message metadata including platform, chat ID, and requested duration from the owner's tag.
  2. Modify the configuration file to set requireMention to false for the specific group, opening the communication gate.
  3. The gateway hot-reloads the updated settings automatically, allowing the agent to participate naturally.
  4. A one-shot cron job is scheduled to expire after the specified time limit.
  5. Upon expiration, the skill resets the configuration and sends a goodbye message, closing the participation window.

Group Activation Setup

Ensure your agent configuration includes mentionPatterns within agents.list[main].groupChat. To activate, tag the agent in a group. To manually configure the environment for Openclaw Skills, you can update your openclaw.json via CLI:

# Example of manually patching the config
jq '.channels.whatsapp.groups["GROUP_ID"].requireMention = false' openclaw.json > tmp.json && mv tmp.json openclaw.json

Group Activation Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill interacts with the openclaw.json configuration and inbound metadata:

Field Source Description
chat_id Inbound Metadata The unique identifier for the messaging group (from or chat_id).
duration User Intent Parsed timeframe for the session (defaulting to 30 minutes).
requireMention openclaw.json Boolean flag toggled to control response gate.
mentionPatterns openclaw.json Defined trigger phrases that allow the owner to wake the agent.

Group Activation Advanced Features

  • Hot-reloading capability ensuring no gateway or Docker restarts are required for config changes.
  • Dynamic session extension through natural language commands like "stay for another X mins".
  • Automated closing mechanism via one-shot cron jobs that clean up the configuration file.
  • Intelligent participation logic to ensure the agent contributes like a human and avoids flooding the chat.
