What is Idea Coach?

Idea Coach is a sophisticated framework within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills designed to act as your critical sparring partner. It does not just store notes; it challenges your assumptions, forces periodic reviews based on importance, and helps you decide which ideas to pursue and which to drop. By categorizing entries as ideas, problems, or challenges, it provides a structured pathway from initial spark to a fully realized GitHub repository.

This skill bridges the gap between raw brainstorming and technical execution. With built-in logic for review cycles—ranging from daily to quarterly—and direct integration with the GitHub CLI, Idea Coach ensures that your most valuable concepts gain momentum while your stale ideas are intentionally archived. This keeps your mental workspace clear and focused on high-impact shipping.

Idea Coach Use Cases

  • Capturing sudden inspirations, technical problems, or personal challenges before they are forgotten.
  • Conducting sparring sessions with an AI that asks hard questions about the viability of your projects.
  • Automatically scheduling review cycles for high-importance tasks to ensure they do not rot.
  • Transitioning a validated idea into a production-ready GitHub repository with a single command.
  • Managing a portfolio of side projects and deciding which ones to drop based on energy and importance levels.

How Idea Coach Works

  1. Capture: Use the /idea command to quickly log a thought, which is then stored in a local JSON database.
  2. Categorize: Assign attributes like type, domain, energy level, and importance to define the priority and review frequency.
  3. Review: The skill calculates a review cycle based on importance and prompts you via the /idea_due command.
  4. Spar: During reviews, the AI provides critical feedback, helping you refine the scope or identify if an idea should be dropped.
  5. Ship: Once an idea has momentum, use /idea_ship to create a GitHub repo or /idea_sync to turn the concept into a tracked GitHub issue.

Idea Coach Setup

To get started with this addition to your Openclaw Skills, ensure you have the GitHub CLI installed and authenticated. Then, you can begin managing your ideas immediately.

# Authenticate GitHub CLI if not set up
gh auth login

# Capture a new project idea
/idea "Develop a rust-based terminal UI for logs"

# Update an idea status to start development
/idea_update <id> --status developing

Idea Coach Data Schema & Taxonomy

Idea Coach maintains a structured data schema in ~/.openclaw/idea-coach/ideas.json to ensure portability and clarity within the Openclaw Skills environment.

Field Description
id Unique alphanumeric identifier for the entry
type Classification as an idea, problem, or challenge
status The lifecycle stage (captured, exploring, developing, shipped, parked, or dropped)
priority Matrix of energy, urgency, and importance
github_meta Metadata for linked repositories, issues, and synchronization timestamps
interactions A historical log of review notes and AI sparring feedback

Idea Coach Advanced Features

  • Direct GitHub Integration: Create new public or private repositories and sync local ideas as remote issues automatically.
  • Intelligent Review Scheduling: Review cycles dynamically adjust from daily to quarterly based on the importance and energy attributes assigned.
  • Critical Feedback Loop: Unlike passive note-takers, this skill is designed to suggest dropping ideas that lack viability or momentum.
  • Comprehensive Statistics: Use /idea_stats to analyze your productivity, tracking how many ideas successfully ship versus those that are archived.
