What is Identity Trust?

Identity Trust is a robust framework built on W3C standards to provide AI agents with self-sovereign identity. By utilizing this skill, developers can enable agents to create unique identifiers, issue cryptographically signed credentials, and establish verifiable trust relationships without relying on central authorities.

This skill is a cornerstone of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem for building secure, autonomous agent networks. It supports modern cryptographic curves like Ed25519 and integrates seamlessly into Node.js environments or via a powerful CLI, ensuring that every agent interaction is backed by verifiable cryptographic proofs.

Identity Trust Use Cases

  • Creating persistent, self-sovereign identities for autonomous AI agents.
  • Issuing and verifying capability-based credentials for secure API and service access.
  • Building decentralized trust networks where agents evaluate each other's reputation and authority.
  • Implementing W3C-compliant DID and VC standards within multi-agent systems and agent-to-agent communication.

How Identity Trust Works

  1. The user or agent generates a unique Decentralized Identifier (DID) using methods like did:key, did:web, or did:ethr.
  2. Private keys are securely generated and stored locally in the user's home directory to maintain full control over the identity.
  3. Agents request or issue Verifiable Credentials (VCs) containing specific claims, roles, or permissions.
  4. These credentials are cryptographically signed using industry-standard Ed25519 or secp256k1 signatures.
  5. Other agents or services resolve the DID to its document and verify the credential's signature, integrity, and expiration status.
  6. A trust evaluation engine scores the agent based on its verified credential history and predefined trust policies.

Identity Trust Setup

Install via npm

npm install -g openclaw-identity-trust

Identity Trust Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill maintains a local hierarchy at ~/.openclaw/identity/ to organize and protect identity data:

File Description
dids.json Local registry of generated DID Documents and associated metadata.
credentials.json A structured store of all issued, received, and held Verifiable Credentials.
keys.json Securely stored private key material used for signing and authentication.

Identity Trust Advanced Features

  • Support for multiple DID methods including did:key for offline use and did:web for public verification.
  • Policy-based trust scoring system allowing for automated, logic-driven agent evaluations.
  • Full W3C Verifiable Credentials Data Model 1.1 compliance with support for custom claims and expiration dates.
  • Integrated programmatic API for embedding identity management directly into other Openclaw Skills.
  • High-security cryptography powered by audited libraries like @noble/curves and @noble/hashes.
