What is Karakeep Note Capture?

Karakeep Note Capture is an Openclaw Skills workflow for persisting useful findings, setup details, source links, and project notes into Ryan's Karakeep knowledge base. It is designed for information that should be rediscoverable later by a human, not just retained transiently inside a conversation.

This skill bridges agent work and personal knowledge management by turning high-value discoveries into tagged, searchable Karakeep entries. It helps keep durable context out of noisy session transcripts while still preserving important artifacts like URLs, hostnames, file paths, and implementation summaries.

Karakeep Note Capture Use Cases

  • Recording homelab discoveries, service URLs, admin findings, and operational notes.
  • Capturing research references, browse-later sources, and useful background material.
  • Saving project notes that behave more like bookmarks or knowledge-base entries than ephemeral memory.
  • Documenting completed setup work in a human-facing archive.
  • Preserving information that should remain discoverable by Ryan and future agents.
  • Storing both Karakeep notes and local memory when the fact matters for continuity and for later browsing.

How Karakeep Note Capture Works

  1. Evaluate whether the information is durable and useful enough to store in Karakeep.
  2. Filter out secrets, private messages, credentials, and noisy raw logs.
  3. Write a concise, recognizable title that Ryan can quickly understand later.
  4. Put the substantive note content in the body, including helpful context like URLs, hostnames, IDs, or file paths when relevant.
  5. Add one or more project or domain tags using repeated --tag flags.
  6. Run the karakeep-note helper and confirm it returns a JSON object containing an id.
  7. If the note also matters for future agent continuity, update the appropriate local memory file as well.

Karakeep Note Capture Setup

  1. Ensure the Karakeep helper and secrets are present in the OpenClaw workspace.
  2. Verify the API token file exists at /root/.openclaw/secrets/karakeep-openclaw-api-token and is permissioned securely with mode 0600.
  3. Use the workspace helper to create notes in the OpenClaw Notes list.
  4. Pass a title plus one or more tags; the default tags are openclaw and kevin.
  5. Confirm the helper returns a JSON response with a note id.
/root/.openclaw/workspace/bin/karakeep-note --title "Useful finding" --tag project-name <<'EOF'
Body text to save.
EOF
chmod 0600 /root/.openclaw/secrets/karakeep-openclaw-api-token

Example capture:

printf '%s\n' 'Zabbix dashboard sync lives in /root/.openclaw/workspace/zabbix-proxmox-services and updates host-a/host-b service status.' \
  | /root/.openclaw/workspace/bin/karakeep-note --title 'Zabbix Proxmox service dashboard notes' --tag zabbix --tag proxmox

Karakeep Note Capture Data Schema & Taxonomy

Karakeep Note Capture does not define a local database schema; instead, it organizes captured knowledge through note metadata and list membership.

Field / Concept Purpose Notes
Title Human-readable summary Should be concise and recognizable later
Body Durable note content Include useful context, avoid credentials
Tags Retrieval and categorization Supports repeated --tag flags for project/domain classification
List Archive destination Defaults to OpenClaw Notes
Default tags Baseline taxonomy openclaw, kevin
API token scope Authentication and permissions Scoped as openclaw-notes with bookmark/list/tag read-write permissions
Return payload Capture confirmation Helper returns JSON containing an id

Recommended content taxonomy:

  • Operational: service names, hostnames, URLs, infrastructure notes.
  • Research: references, sources, and browse-later findings.
  • Project: setup summaries and implementation notes.
  • Context: IDs, file paths, and navigation hints that improve rediscovery.

Karakeep Note Capture Advanced Features

  • Supports structured tagging with repeated --tag flags for multi-dimensional retrieval.
  • Produces a machine-readable JSON response with a persistent note id for automation pipelines.
  • Integrates directly with Openclaw Skills workflows using a lightweight CLI helper.
  • Can be paired with local memory updates for dual-purpose persistence: human browsing plus agent continuity.
  • Uses a dedicated token scope and secret file workflow for controlled access to Karakeep.
  • Designed to capture durable knowledge without polluting chat transcripts or ephemeral session state.
  • Encourages clean knowledge hygiene by separating sensitive data from rediscoverable notes.
