What is Karbon?

Karbon is a leading practice management platform tailored for accounting firms, enabling them to manage complex workflows, internal collaboration, and client communications in one place. By utilizing this skill within the Openclaw Skills framework, developers can empower AI agents to interact with Karbon data seamlessly. The integration leverages the Membrane CLI to handle the heavy lifting of authentication and credential management, allowing agents to focus on executing logic rather than managing API plumbing.

This skill provides a robust bridge between AI reasoning and professional accounting operations. Whether you are managing organizations, updating contact details, or tracking work items, this integration ensures that your AI tools have direct, secure access to the Karbon ecosystem. It is an essential component for firms looking to automate repetitive administrative tasks and improve overall operational efficiency.

Karbon Use Cases

  • Automatically creating and updating work items based on client requests.
  • Synchronizing contact and organization data between Karbon and other CRM tools.
  • Managing practice workflows by retrieving and applying work templates.
  • Generating internal notes and user assignments for specific accounting engagements.

How Karbon Works

  1. The agent initiates a session by logging into the Membrane CLI and establishing a connection to the Karbon domain.
  2. Authentication is performed via a secure OAuth flow, which Membrane manages server-side to ensure no local secrets are exposed.
  3. The agent uses natural language intent to search for available actions, such as list-users or create-organization, through the Openclaw Skills interface.
  4. Once an action is identified, the agent executes it with the necessary JSON parameters to interact with the Karbon API.
  5. If a specific endpoint is not covered by a pre-built action, the agent can use the proxy request feature to communicate directly with the API while maintaining managed authentication.

Karbon Setup

First, install the Membrane CLI globally to enable terminal-based interactions:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest

Authenticate your agent using the following command, specifying openclaw as the client name:

membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Establish a connection to Karbon by providing the application URL:

membrane connection ensure "https://karbonhq.com/" --json

If the connection state is BUILDING, poll for readiness:

membrane connection get <id> --wait --json

Karbon Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Karbon skill organizes data into a hierarchical practice management taxonomy:

Object Type Description
Client Includes engagements, request lists, and specific client requests.
Template Pre-defined work structures used to standardize tasks.
Work Item Individual tasks and units of work being tracked for clients.
User Internal staff records including roles and workspace assignments.
Time Entry Logged duration for tasks to facilitate billing and analytics.

Karbon Advanced Features

  • Natural language action discovery to find the right tool for specific accounting intents.
  • Direct API proxying with automatic header injection and credential refresh.
  • Multi-agent support via standardized JSON output for all CLI commands.
  • Automated handling of complex client actions and configuration errors within the connection lifecycle.
  • Support for headless environment authentication via manual code entry.
