What is MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI?

The MakeWPFast Benchmark skill allows AI coding agents to retrieve actual, measured performance profiles of WordPress plugins and themes directly from the MakeWPFast API using a bundled command-line utility. By integrating this capability, your AI workflows can audit local WordPress installations, check speed grades, and compare complex database query or memory overhead profiles without guessing or relying on outdated training data.

As part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, this skill implements protective CLI-level caching, automatic name-to-slug resolution, and batch-request guards. This ensures that paid API quotas are optimized and preserved, making automated site audits both highly cost-effective and technically accurate.

MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI Use Cases

  • Compare the performance and TTFB cost of competing plugins (such as Yoast SEO vs. Rank Math) before installation.
  • Audit local WordPress directories to identify resource-heavy active plugins and suggest lighter alternatives.
  • Diagnose database query bloat or high memory overhead associated with specific themes or plugins in activation, homepage, and wp-admin contexts.
  • Retrieve fast, cached performance scores during automated development workflows to maintain site speed budgets.

How MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI Works

  1. Trigger: The AI agent receives a query regarding WordPress plugin or theme performance, speed comparisons, or site optimization audits.
  2. Slug Resolution: The agent uses the mwf-bench resolve command to translate plain-text user inputs into verified WordPress.org slugs for free, bypassing quota expenses.
  3. Quota Verification: For broad audits, the agent checks remaining limits using the me command before performing batch executions.
  4. Execution & Caching: The agent runs the appropriate CLI command (lookup, compare, or audit). The CLI automatically queries the MakeWPFast API or returns free, locally cached results if the query was recently made.
  5. Analysis: The agent parses the returned human-readable text or structured JSON data, interprets speed grades and delta contexts, and presents structured optimization recommendations to the user.

MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI Setup

To configure this skill, you must first obtain an API key from MakeWPFast. You can authenticate and store your credentials using one of the methods below.

Authentication Command

Run the built-in auth wizard which securely prompts you for your key:

scripts/mwf-bench auth

Environment Variable

Alternatively, you can export your API key directly to your environment:

export MWF_API_KEY="your_api_key_here"

Configuration Path

You may also write your API key directly to the local configuration file at ~/.config/makewpfast/key.

MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill outputs data using structured CLI text or JSON representations. The table below details the performance metrics returned for activation, homepage, and wp-admin contexts:

Metric Field Unit Description
Speed Grade A–F (0–100) Overall rating computed from activation memory and query deltas. Higher is faster.
TTFB Delta Milliseconds (ms) Time-to-First-Byte difference compared against a clean, baseline WordPress installation.
Memory Delta Kilobytes (KB) Memory consumption overhead introduced by the plugin or theme.
Query Delta Raw Count Additional database queries executed during the test context.

Note: If a metric is returned as null or not measured, it indicates the plugin does not operate in that specific context (e.g., admin-only plugins returning null for homepage metrics), which should be interpreted as unknown or unmeasured impact rather than zero impact.

MakeWPFast Benchmark CLI Advanced Features

  • Local Cache Management: Automatically caches API results to eliminate recurring costs on identical queries within the same workspace session.
  • Intelligent Audit Mode: Scans full local WordPress codebases to analyze active plugins, prioritizing the benchmarking of known resource-heavy components.
  • Ambiguous Slug Guardrails: Safely halts execution and prompts the user for clarification when multiple matching plugins are detected, preventing wasteful quota spend on incorrect slugs.
  • JSON Output Formatting: Native support for the --format json flag, facilitating seamless machine parsing and multi-agent workflow interoperability.
