What is Markdown Highlight?

Markdown Highlight is a sophisticated utility designed to transform dense documents into easily scannable content. By analyzing the context of your text—whether it is technical documentation, a narrative story, or a scientific guide—it applies specific CSS-based background highlights to emphasize essential information. This Openclaw Skills extension ensures that key takeaways and critical warnings stand out visually without cluttering the original document structure.

The skill is particularly effective for developers and researchers who need to quickly parse large volumes of information. It intelligently handles both existing .md files and raw .txt files, automatically converting the latter into structured Markdown before applying the highlighting logic. This ensures your documentation is not only informative but also visually optimized for rapid consumption.

Markdown Highlight Use Cases

  • Annotating technical manuals to make parameters and safety warnings instantly visible.
  • Converting raw research notes into organized, highlighted Markdown reports.
  • Identifying character names and pivotal plot points in narrative manuscripts.
  • Differentiating between definitions, data points, and core conclusions in academic summaries.

How Markdown Highlight Works

  1. The agent reads the target .md or .txt file provided by the user.
  2. If the input is a .txt file, it applies heuristic rules to convert paragraphs and headers into a standard Markdown structure.
  3. A specific CSS style block is injected into the file header to define color classes for concepts, conclusions, data, and warnings.
  4. The content is parsed semantically to find 2-8 word keywords that match the document's category (e.g., technical, narrative, or instructional).
  5. The identified keywords are wrapped in HTML span tags with the corresponding CSS classes.
  6. The final output is written back to the original .md file or saved as a new .md file if the source was .txt.

Markdown Highlight Setup

To use this skill within your environment, ensure you have python3 installed. This tool is part of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.

# Example of how an agent might invoke the highlighting logic
# Ensure python3 is available in your path
python3 --version

No additional complex configuration is required as the CSS is self-contained within the generated output files.

Markdown Highlight Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data by applying a specific CSS schema to the Markdown metadata. It uses a semantic mapping system to ensure consistency across different document types.

Class Color Purpose
hl-concept Light Blue (#d1ecf1) Definitions, terms, names, and core concepts.
hl-conclusion Light Yellow (#fff3cd) Main ideas, final results, and core conclusions.
hl-data Light Green (#d4edda) Numbers, percentages, dates, and key metrics.
hl-warning Light Orange (#fff2e6) Critical alerts, requirements, and safety warnings.

For files exceeding 500 lines, the skill implements a chunking strategy (200-400 lines per block) to maintain processing efficiency and accuracy.

Markdown Highlight Advanced Features

  • Smart Context Detection: Automatically adjusts highlighting logic based on whether the text is technical, narrative, or instructional.
  • Large File Support: Intelligent chunking strategy for documents over 500 lines to ensure stability and performance.
  • Non-Destructive Editing: Preserves all original Markdown elements including tables, code blocks, and links while adding highlights.
  • CSS-Based Styling: Uses clean HTML classes instead of messy inline styles, allowing for easy global theme adjustments.
  • Automated TXT-to-MD Conversion: Seamlessly upgrades plain text files into structured Markdown documents.
