What is MD Viewer?

MD Viewer is a specialized utility within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem that solves the frustration of reading raw Markdown files on small screens or e-ink devices. Instead of forcing the user to read through a summary or raw terminal text, this skill launches a localized web server that serves beautifully rendered HTML versions of your documents.

Built with a focus on accessibility and security, it automatically detects your local network IP to allow seamless cross-device viewing. The interface is specifically tuned for comfortable long-form reading, featuring high-contrast serif fonts and a light theme that excels on e-readers and mobile browsers.

MD Viewer Use Cases

  • Viewing project documentation on a tablet or e-reader while coding on a primary monitor.
  • Sharing technical notes instantly with other devices on the same WiFi network.
  • Reviewing long-form Markdown content without cluttering the main AI chat interface.
  • Reading documentation in a distraction-free, e-ink optimized browser environment.

How MD Viewer Works

  1. The user triggers the skill by asking to see, view, or open a specific .md file.
  2. The skill initializes a Python-based web server that automatically binds to the system's LAN IP address.
  3. A unique, secure password and an access token are generated for the session.
  4. The skill provides a direct URL containing an authentication token, allowing the user to bypass the login screen on their first click.
  5. Upon access, the server reads the file, sanitizes the content using the bleach library, and serves it as high-contrast HTML.
  6. A 30-day cookie is established on the viewing device to ensure subsequent visits remain authenticated without re-entering credentials.

MD Viewer Setup

To get started with this addition to your Openclaw Skills library, ensure you have the necessary Python dependencies installed:

pip3 install markdown bleach

Run the server using the default configuration to auto-detect your LAN IP:

python3 ~/.openclaw/skills/md-viewer/scripts/server.py

MD Viewer Data Schema & Taxonomy

MD Viewer prioritizes security and privacy in its data handling:

Feature Mechanism
File Support Strictly limited to .md extensions; all other file types are rejected.
Path Security Hardcoded blocklist prevents access to sensitive directories like ~/.ssh, /etc, and .env files.
History Tracks the last 50 viewed files locally for quick navigation (can be disabled).
Authentication Uses cookie-based auth valid for 30 days and URL-embedded tokens for one-time seamless entry.

MD Viewer Advanced Features

  • Auto LAN Binding: Automatically detects and binds to your network IP, removing the need to manually lookup addresses for cross-device sharing.
  • E-Ink Optimization: Specific CSS styling including serif fonts and high-contrast ratios designed specifically for e-reader hardware.
  • Security Hardening: Includes Content Security Policy (CSP) headers and XSS protection to ensure that rendered Markdown cannot execute malicious scripts.
  • Customizable Server: Advanced CLI options allow users to specify custom ports, set manual passwords, or restrict access to localhost only for maximum privacy.
