What is Meals?

The Meals skill transforms your local file system into a powerful culinary command center. It leverages Openclaw Skills to help you organize weekly menus, manage a personal meal database, and automate shopping lists based on your specific dietary preferences and pantry stock. By maintaining a structured directory of markdown files, it ensures you spend less time planning and more time enjoying healthy, home-cooked food. This system is designed to grow with you, using progressive enhancement to move from simple planning to complex pattern-based suggestions over time.

Meals Use Cases

  • Planning weekly dinners while balancing variety and time constraints.
  • Automatically generating a categorized shopping list that excludes existing pantry staples.
  • Building a historical database of favorite meals with ratings and dietary tags.
  • Managing leftovers and batch cooking strategies for busy weeknights.
  • Tracking dietary restrictions and preferences across a household.

How Meals Works

  1. The AI agent analyzes your upcoming week to determine the number of meals needed and identifies busy nights.
  2. You select meals or receive suggestions from your local database located in the ~/meals/ directory.
  3. A weekly plan file is generated in the plans/ subdirectory using a structured markdown format.
  4. The agent aggregates ingredients from the planned recipes, combines quantities, and subtracts items found in your pantry staples list.
  5. A categorized shopping list is produced, organized by store section (produce, dairy, meat, etc.).
  6. After cooking, you provide quick ratings to help the system refine future meal suggestions.

Meals Setup

To get started with this skill within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, follow these steps:

  1. Initialize your workspace directory:
mkdir -p ~/meals/{plans,meals,shopping}
  1. Create a preferences.md file in the ~/meals/ folder to define your dietary restrictions and pantry staples.
  2. Add your first few favorite recipes as markdown files in ~/meals/meals/ including metadata for prep and cook times.

Meals Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data using a clean, file-based taxonomy:

Path Purpose
~/meals/plans/ Contains weekly markdown files (e.g., 2024-week-11.md) with meal tables.
~/meals/meals/ A database of individual recipe files including tags for difficulty and dietary needs.
~/meals/shopping/ Storage for generated grocery lists grouped by store section.
~/meals/preferences.md A configuration file for allergies, dislikes, and recurring pantry staples.

Meals Advanced Features

  • Intelligent pantry management that automatically updates when staples run out.
  • Leftover transformation logic, such as turning a Sunday roast chicken into a Monday salad.
  • Batch cooking support with Sunday prep suggestions to save time during the week.
  • Seasonal awareness that suggests grilling in the summer and stews in the winter based on Openclaw Skills logic.
  • Progressive learning that identifies patterns like "Mexican Mondays" or "Pizza Fridays" over months of use.
