What is Nhost?

Nhost is an open-source Firebase alternative designed for web and mobile developers who need a scalable, secure backend without the burden of infrastructure management. This skill bridges the gap between your development environment and Nhost services, allowing you to handle users, files, and database records seamlessly. By using Openclaw Skills, you gain access to a pre-configured environment where Membrane handles all authentication plumbing and credential refreshing automatically.

Nhost Use Cases

  • Automating user record management and authentication workflows.
  • Uploading and organizing files within Nhost Storage directly from the terminal or agent.
  • Executing GraphQL queries and mutations to interact with application databases.
  • Creating secure, automated backend integrations without manual API key handling.

How Nhost Works

  1. Initialize the environment by installing the Membrane CLI and logging in with an agent-specific tenant.
  2. Establish a secure connection to your Nhost app URL, which Membrane automatically normalizes and authenticates.
  3. Search for specific backend actions (like querying users or uploading files) using natural language intent discovery.
  4. Execute high-level actions or perform direct API proxy requests with automatic header injection and credential management.

Nhost Setup

First, install the CLI and authenticate your session:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest
membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Next, connect to your Nhost instance:

membrane connection ensure "https://nhost.io/" --json

If the state is BUILDING, poll for readiness:

membrane connection get <id> --wait --json

Nhost Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill utilizes a structured schema to manage connections and service interactions. Data is primarily organized by connection IDs and specific action inputs.

Component Description
Connection ID A unique identifier for the Nhost instance connection.
Action Schema JSON definitions for parameters required by Auth, Storage, or GraphQL functions.
Input/Output Standardized JSON objects for passing data and receiving responses from Nhost endpoints.
Proxy Requests Direct API path mapping with automatic base URL and header injection.

Nhost Advanced Features

  • Automatic credential refresh to ensure long-running Openclaw Skills workflows never expire.
  • Natural language action discovery to find the optimal tools for specific backend tasks.
  • Headless environment support via authorization URL codes.
  • Full API proxying capability for any Nhost endpoint not covered by pre-built actions.
  • Multi-agent compatibility with specific tooling adjustments for Openclaw and other AI coding assistants.
