What is Codebase Intelligence?

Codebase Intelligence is a robust analysis engine designed to help developers master complex software projects within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem. It provides a technical map of any repository by identifying module boundaries, tracking cross-file dependencies, and indexing symbols like classes and functions. By implementing an incremental caching layer, it maintains high performance even on massive codebases, ensuring that subsequent searches and queries are nearly instantaneous.

This skill bridges the gap between raw source code and developer understanding by offering a conversational interface for code discovery. Whether you are navigating a legacy system or building new features, Codebase Intelligence ensures you have the structural context needed to write better code faster.

Codebase Intelligence Use Cases

  • Onboarding to a new or legacy project to quickly understand the overall architecture.
  • Performing impact analysis before refactoring a module to see all affected dependencies.
  • Generating up-to-date Mermaid diagrams for technical documentation or pull request reviews.
  • Identifying the exact location of specific logic, such as authentication or payment flows, using natural language queries.

How Codebase Intelligence Works

  1. The user initiates an analysis using the Openclaw Skills CLI, which scans the project root and identifies all supported source files.
  2. The indexer extracts symbols (classes, functions, imports) and maps the relationships between different files and modules.
  3. A local cache is created in the .codebase-intelligence directory to store metadata and dependency graphs.
  4. Subsequent queries use this cache to provide instant answers, updating only the files that have changed since the last scan.
  5. Specialized modules for diagrams and dependency tracking transform the indexed data into visual or structured reports.

Codebase Intelligence Setup

To begin using Codebase Intelligence, ensure you have Python 3 installed. Navigate to your project directory and run the following commands:

# Navigate to your project
cd /path/to/your/repo

# Run the initial codebase analysis and build the cache
python3 /path/to/codebase-intelligence/scripts/main.py analyze .

You can optionally create a .codebase-intelligence.json file in your project root to exclude specific directories:

{
  "ignore": ["node_modules", ".git", "dist"],
  "entryPoints": ["src/main.py"]
}

Codebase Intelligence Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes its intelligence data within a hidden folder in your project root. Here is how the data is structured:

File/Directory Purpose
.codebase-intelligence/ Root directory for all skill-related metadata.
codebase_index.pkl Binary serialized cache containing the dependency graph and symbol table.
index.json An exportable JSON representation of the codebase structure for external tool integration.
architecture.md (Optional) Generated Markdown files containing Mermaid diagrams.

Codebase Intelligence Advanced Features

  • Incremental Caching: Automatically detects file changes to update the index in milliseconds for large repositories.
  • Deep Dependency Tracking: Supports reverse-dependency lookups to find all files that rely on a specific utility or module.
  • Multi-Language Support: Full symbol parsing for Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Go, and Java.
  • CI/CD Integration: Can be integrated into GitHub Actions to generate architecture maps automatically on every push.
  • Smart Q&A: A dedicated ask command that uses keyword and relationship matching to answer structural questions about the project.
