What is OpenHue?

OpenHue is a specialized skill designed to bridge the gap between AI agents and Philips Hue lighting hardware. By utilizing the OpenHue CLI, this skill allows users to programmatically discover Hue Bridges, manage light states, and trigger complex scenes using simple terminal-based commands. It transforms your smart lighting into an extensible component of your automated environment.

As part of the broader ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, OpenHue focuses on providing a structured interface for hardware interaction. It enables developers and power users to incorporate physical environment controls into their digital workflows, making it possible to synchronize lighting with tasks, schedules, or external triggers.

OpenHue Use Cases

  • Automating home office lighting based on your calendar or meeting status.
  • Triggering specific room scenes for focus sessions or evening relaxation.
  • Monitoring the power state and brightness of lights across multiple rooms.
  • Integrating physical visual alerts into development or deployment pipelines.

How OpenHue Works

  1. The skill uses the OpenHue binary to scan the local network and discover the Hue Bridge IP address.
  2. A secure handshake is established between the CLI and the Bridge, usually requiring a physical button press on the hardware.
  3. The agent queries the Bridge using get commands to retrieve current lighting configurations in JSON format.
  4. Commands are sent via the CLI to update specific light attributes like RGB color, brightness levels, or power status.

OpenHue Setup

To get started, ensure you have the OpenHue CLI installed via Homebrew:

brew install openhue/cli/openhue-cli

Once installed, initialize the connection to your Hue Bridge:

openhue discover
openhue setup

Follow the prompts provided by the CLI, which will include pressing the link button on your physical Hue Bridge to authorize the connection.

OpenHue Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill processes and returns structured data from the Philips Hue API. The following entities are managed:

Entity Attributes Managed
Light ID, Name, On/Off State, Brightness (0-100), RGB Color
Room ID, Name, Light Groupings
Scene ID, Name, Preset Lighting States

All data retrieval commands support the --json flag, ensuring the AI agent receives parseable metadata for complex decision-making within Openclaw Skills.

OpenHue Advanced Features

  • Targeted control using the --room flag to resolve naming conflicts between lights in different areas.
  • Support for HEX color codes (e.g., #3399FF) for precise lighting design.
  • Granular brightness control via percentage-based arguments.
  • Integration-ready JSON output for building custom dashboards or secondary automations.
