What is OpenPet?

OpenPet is a comprehensive virtual pet game designed to bring the classic Tamagotchi experience to modern chat environments like Discord, Telegram, and WhatsApp. As a robust implementation within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it manages individual pet states for every user, tracking vital metrics such as hunger, happiness, energy, and age.

The skill utilizes a sophisticated state management system where each pet is uniquely identified by the user's platform and ID. It provides a highly visual experience through dynamic ASCII art and emoji-based status bars, ensuring that users can easily monitor their pet's wellbeing. Whether you are building a community bot or a personal assistant, this skill adds a layer of interactive entertainment and long-term engagement.

OpenPet Use Cases

  • Community engagement for Discord servers and Telegram groups.
  • Interactive digital companions for private messaging platforms like WhatsApp or Signal.
  • Demonstrating persistent state management and cron-based automation in Openclaw Skills.
  • Stress-relief and gamified breaks within professional or social chat environments.

How OpenPet Works

  1. The user initiates the skill by sending any pet-related command, which triggers the creation of a unique pet egg identified by a platform-specific ID.
  2. Subsequent interactions hatch the egg into a 'blob' species, initializing the pet's base statistics and storage in a JSON-based database.
  3. Users manage their pet's health using natural language commands like feed pet or pet sleep, which modifies stats and increments interaction counters.
  4. A background cron job periodically updates the pet's state, simulating biological decay by increasing hunger and decreasing energy over time.
  5. The skill continuously evaluates evolution criteria; once a pet reaches specific age and interaction milestones, it evolves into more advanced species like a cat or dragon.

OpenPet Setup

To get started with OpenPet, ensure your environment is ready for persistent data storage by creating the required directory structure:

mkdir -p tamagotchi/pets/

To ensure your pet experiences stat decay and aging, set up a cron job to trigger the tick logic every two hours:

# Example crontab entry for openpet-tick
0 */2 * * * openclaw-cli run openpet --action tick

You can also toggle immortalMode in your configuration file to prevent pet death if a more casual user experience is desired for your Openclaw Skills deployment.

OpenPet Data Schema & Taxonomy

Each pet's lifecycle is captured in a structured JSON schema located in the tamagotchi/pets/ directory. The data is organized to track both current status and historical growth milestones.

Property Description
species The current evolution stage (e.g., egg, blob, cat, dragon).
stats Numerical values (0-100) for hunger, happiness, and energy.
counters Total feedings and plays used to calculate evolution eligibility.
metadata Includes born timestamp, ownerId, and the origin platform.
alive A boolean flag indicating the pet's current status.

OpenPet Advanced Features

  • Multi-platform compatibility with specific detection for Discord, WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal.
  • Dynamic ASCII art rendering that changes based on the pet's current mood and evolution stage.
  • Integrated alerting system that sends proactive notifications when a pet is starving, sad, or ready to evolve.
  • Evolution branching logic that requires a balance of age, feeding frequency, and play sessions.
  • Configurable immortal mode for environments where users prefer a low-stakes experience without the risk of pet death.
