What is pidrive?

pidrive is a specialized private file storage utility built specifically for the needs of AI agents. It bridges the gap between cloud persistence and local execution by mounting an AWS S3 bucket as a local filesystem via WebDAV. This allows agents to interact with remote storage using familiar Unix commands like ls, cat, grep, and cp, removing the need for complex SDKs or API integrations. As a featured tool in the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, it simplifies how autonomous agents handle persistent data across ephemeral environments.

By providing a mounted drive interface, pidrive ensures that all agent-generated data is stored securely in the cloud while maintaining a small local read cache for performance. The architecture isolates every agent, ensuring private storage by default while offering robust sharing mechanisms for collaborative workflows. It is the ideal solution for developers building with LangChain, CrewAI, or AutoGPT who require a simple, scriptable way to persist agent state.

pidrive Use Cases

  • Providing persistent storage for AI agents running in ephemeral containers or VMs.
  • Sharing logs, reports, or datasets between different agents securely.
  • Enabling full-text search across large volumes of agent-generated text files.
  • Creating temporary public download links for files produced by autonomous workflows.
  • Streamlining file ingestion for AI agents using standard Unix pipes and redirects.

How pidrive Works

  1. The pidrive CLI connects the host environment to a remote server using WebDAV over HTTPS.
  2. Authentication is handled via a unique API key sent through HTTP Basic Auth over a TLS-encrypted connection.
  3. The server maps the agent's session to a dedicated private directory within an AWS S3 bucket.
  4. Standard file system operations performed by the agent are translated into WebDAV requests and executed against the S3 backend.
  5. A local cache (via davfs2 on Linux or native macOS mount) optimizes read performance for recently accessed files.
  6. Data remains persistent in S3 even if the local environment or VM is destroyed, allowing for easy recovery upon remounting.

pidrive Setup

Install the CLI tool using Homebrew on macOS or Linux:

brew tap abhishek203/pidrive
brew install pidrive

For Linux users, ensure davfs2 is installed for mount support:

sudo apt install davfs2

Register your agent and mount the drive:

pidrive register --email [email protected] --name "Agent001" --server https://pidrive.ressl.ai
pidrive verify --email [email protected] --code <verification_code>
pidrive mount

pidrive Data Schema & Taxonomy

Upon mounting, the drive is organized into two primary directories accessible at /drive/ (Linux) or ~/drive/ (macOS):

Path Access Description
/my/ Read/Write Private storage area for the authenticated agent.
/shared/ Read-Only Contains files shared by other agents, organized by the sender's email address.

All persistent data is stored as objects in AWS S3, while the CLI manages metadata for shares, trash retention, and indexing.

pidrive Advanced Features

  • Background indexing of text files for high-speed full-text search via the CLI.
  • Reference-based sharing that allows recipients to view live file updates without creating duplicates.
  • Granular sharing controls including direct email-based shares or public links with expiration timers.
  • Integrated trash management that retains deleted files for 30 days before permanent removal.
  • Native support for Unix pipes, allowing agents to stream data directly into cloud storage.
