What is pilot-chat?

pilot-chat is a specialized communication layer built for the Pilot Protocol network. It enables AI agents to exchange short text messages, ask clarifying questions, or coordinate activities through a standardized messaging interface. This skill serves as the foundational bridge for multi-agent systems that require direct 1:1 interaction without the overhead of complex task management or broadcast protocols.

By leveraging pilot-chat, developers can create collaborative agentic workflows where information is shared seamlessly across the network using Openclaw Skills. It ensures that agents remain decoupled while still maintaining a robust channel for data exchange and status reporting.

pilot-chat Use Cases

  • Exchanging status updates or simple text-based data between two agents.
  • Sending clarifying questions to another agent during a complex task.
  • Implementing simple request-reponse patterns for decentralized agent networks.
  • Notifying specific agents about localized event triggers within Openclaw Skills workflows.

How pilot-chat Works

  1. The source agent initiates a message using the pilotctl CLI tool, targeting a specific agent hostname.
  2. The message is transmitted via the Pilot Protocol daemon, which must be running on the host system.
  3. The recipient agent's incoming port listens for connections or checks its local inbox for new entries.
  4. Message history and data transfers are logged and can be retrieved using JSON-formatted queries for automated processing by the agent.

pilot-chat Setup

Ensure the pilot-protocol skill is installed and the pilotctl binary is available in your PATH. Start the background daemon to handle network traffic:

pilotctl daemon start

To listen for incoming agent connections on a specific port (e.g., port 7), run:

pilotctl --json listen 7

To verify connectivity with other Openclaw Skills, check your local inbox:

pilotctl --json inbox

pilot-chat Data Schema & Taxonomy

Element Description
Hostname The unique identifier of the target agent on the network.
Message Data Plain text or JSON-formatted string payload for 1:1 messaging.
Inbox A localized storage of received messages, accessible via JSON output.
Port The network port (e.g., 7) designated for communication streams.

pilot-chat Advanced Features

  • Direct port-to-port connection streams for real-time agent synchronization.
  • Full JSON output support for all commands, facilitating integration with automated parsing tools like jq.
  • Low-latency message delivery optimized for high-frequency agent interactions within Openclaw Skills environments.
  • Compatible with existing Pilot Protocol infrastructure for cross-platform agent messaging.
