What is Pixel Asset Compiler?

The Pixel Asset Compiler is a technical utility designed to transition AI-generated art into structured game engine files. By consuming character reference sheets alongside action-specific images, this tool produces deterministic, well-aligned sprite assets. It helps developers enforce consistency, eliminate background residues, and scale game assets while maintaining artistic intent.

As part of the Openclaw Skills collection, this system automates structural validation and export workflows. It bridges the gap between raw generative AI outputs and structured engine imports, providing tools to verify game-ready formats for platforms like Godot 4.

Pixel Asset Compiler Use Cases

  • Converting AI-generated pixel character reference sheets and action strips into structured asset packages
  • Auditing multi-frame animations for visual consistency, frame alignment, and color palette drift
  • Automating the removal of flat backgrounds and preserving detached visual effects across frames
  • Packaging and exporting sprite sheets directly into engine-specific formats, such as Godot 4 AnimatedSprite2D scenes
  • Conducting targeted regeneration requests for specific failed actions while keeping successful assets intact

How Pixel Asset Compiler Works

  1. Inspection: The tool scans the target directory to verify the character reference and ensure each named action contains exactly one action sheet.
  2. Manifest Verification: It validates or creates the sprite-asset.manifest.json file containing definitions for FPS, loop configurations, and frame counts.
  3. Quality Auditing: The compiler processes the images using quality gates to detect structural ambiguities, visual drift, and background artifacts.
  4. Action Compilation: Once all quality checks pass, the utility generates the unified sprite sheets and metadata.
  5. Engine Exporting: The system packages the final assets and can export complete scene configurations, such as Godot .tscn files.

Pixel Asset Compiler Setup

To install the compiler globally via npm, run the following command:

npm install --global pixel-asset-compiler

If you are developing locally within the repository, compile the CLI using:

npm run cli:build

You can then run the end-to-end workflow script:

node <skill-dir>/scripts/run-workflow.mjs --input <character-source> --output <generic-asset-dir> --target godot --target-output <godot-asset-dir>

Pixel Asset Compiler Data Schema & Taxonomy

The compiler expects a structured directory layout and produces validated outputs as shown below:

Directory Structure

character-source/
├── reference.png
├── actions/
│ └── <action>.png
└── sprite-asset.manifest.json

Asset Manifest Specification

The sprite-asset.manifest.json file contains semantic rules for each action:

Property Type Description
fps Integer Frames per second for the animation
loop Boolean Defines if the animation should loop
frameCount Integer The exact count of frames within the action strip

All quality gates and export reports are recorded to verify the compilation state.

Pixel Asset Compiler Advanced Features

  • Targeted Action Regeneration: Isolates and requests updates only for failed animations, maintaining the integrity of successful assets.
  • Automated Quality Gates: Detects background residues and scale variations dynamically before exporting.
  • Headless Engine Validation: Loads exported scene files headlessly to verify engine compatibility before finishing the task.
  • Deterministic CLI Execution: Employs a workflow script that reports clear error codes for automated continuous integration.
