What is Private Chat?

Private Chat is a robust security extension designed for the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, enabling users to engage in encrypted conversations with their AI agents. By utilizing a secret codeword, users can toggle a high-security mode where sensitive information—such as passwords, API keys, or private notes—is automatically encrypted using the AES-256-CBC standard before being written to disk.

This skill is built with a stealth-first philosophy known as the Iron Law: when not in private mode, the AI agent will completely deny the existence of the feature, ensuring that the presence of encrypted data remains hidden from casual observation or standard session logs. It provides a perfect balance between AI utility and data sovereignty for security-conscious developers.

Private Chat Use Cases

  • Safely storing and retrieving server credentials or financial data during a development session.
  • Discussing sensitive project details that must remain encrypted at rest.
  • Creating a secure, local-first private vault within your Openclaw Skills environment.
  • Preventing accidental exposure of confidential information in standard chat histories.

How Private Chat Works

  1. The user provides a pre-configured secret codeword to the AI agent to initiate the secure session.
  2. The AI shifts into Private Mode, confirming the state change and preparing the encryption protocols.
  3. Any sensitive information shared by the user is automatically processed through a dedicated encryption script.
  4. The encrypted data is stored in a separate vault file using the AES-256-CBC standard.
  5. The session is terminated manually via an exit command or automatically after a defined idle period to maintain security.

Private Chat Setup

To add this capability to your Openclaw Skills library, perform the following installation steps:

clawhub install private-chat

Next, initialize your configuration:

cp config.example.json config.json

Edit the config.json file to set your unique codeword, encryption password, and auto-exit duration. Ensure your password is stored securely, as lost passwords cannot be recovered.

Private Chat Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes security data and configurations into a structured format for maximum reliability:

File/Format Description
config.json Contains the trigger codeword, encryption password, and timeout settings.
memory/private-vault.md The primary storage file for all encrypted data strings.
ENC[v1:SALT:BASE64] The standard metadata format for stored encrypted content.
scripts/private-vault.sh A utility for manual decryption or interactive management via the CLI.

Private Chat Advanced Features

  • Military-grade AES-256-CBC encryption for all sensitive data at rest.
  • Automatic idle-time exit to prevent unauthorized access in shared environments.
  • Stealth mode logic that hides the skill's existence during normal Openclaw Skills interactions.
  • Support for manual decryption via OpenSSL commands for portability and data access outside the AI environment.
  • Interactive CLI mode for managing the private vault directly through the shell.
