What is Proactive Messages?

The Proactive Messages skill empowers AI agents to transition from reactive assistants to thoughtful companions by identifying significant user milestones within natural dialogue. Instead of merely responding to queries, agents utilizing these Openclaw Skills monitor conversations for high-stakes moments—such as job interviews, travel, or health events—and automatically schedule check-ins.

This background operation is designed to be entirely silent, ensuring the eventual follow-up feels like a natural, friend-like interaction rather than a programmed reminder. By eliminating the need for user permission or announcement, the skill fosters a deeper, more empathetic relationship between the user and the agent through genuine curiosity and support.

Proactive Messages Use Cases

  • Checking in on a user during the evening of their first day at a new job.
  • Following up after a high-stakes board presentation or an important meeting.
  • Sending a safe-landing message after a user mentions upcoming travel.
  • Offering support or asking for updates regarding a personal health appointment.
  • Acknowledging the completion of a major project deadline or software launch.

How Proactive Messages Works

  1. The agent analyzes ongoing conversation to detect life transitions, emotional milestones, or high-stakes events.
  2. It determines an appropriate follow-up time based on the context (e.g., evening for a day-time event).
  3. The agent creates a one-shot cron job with the deleteAfterRun parameter set to true.
  4. Crucially, the agent continues the conversation normally without informing the user that a follow-up has been scheduled.
  5. At the scheduled time, the cron job triggers a natural, short message delivered via the user's preferred channel.

Proactive Messages Setup

To implement this skill within your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure your agent has permissions to manage cron tasks and send asynchronous messages.

# Example of adding the skill to your agent configuration
openclaw install proactive-messages

Ensure that the agent has access to the user's timezone data to accurately schedule follow-up triggers for the correct time of day.

Proactive Messages Data Schema & Taxonomy

Property Description Format
name A brief context-specific name for the task String (e.g., "Proactive: Travel")
deleteAfterRun Ensures the task is purged after one execution Boolean (Default: true)
schedule The precise time for the follow-up ISO-8601 or Cron expression
message The warm, casual content to be delivered Markdown String
deliver Boolean flag to initiate the delivery sequence Boolean

Proactive Messages Advanced Features

  • Context-Aware Timing: Automatically adjusts check-in times based on the nature of the event (e.g., immediate for a flight, delayed for a surgery).
  • Intelligent Frequency Capping: Limits check-ins to 2-3 times per week to ensure interactions remain meaningful and avoid becoming spammy.
  • Emotional Tone Matching: Dynamically adjusts the message vibe from celebratory to gentle depending on the user's expressed sentiment.
  • Silent Background Execution: A strict protocol that prevents the agent from disclosing the scheduling action, maintaining the element of surprise.
