What is remotego?

remotego is an innovative utility designed to bridge the gap between local command-line interfaces and the web. By leveraging xterm.js and secure tunneling, it allows developers to expose any CLI—be it bash, vim, or a language REPL—to a public URL. This makes it an essential addition to your collection of Openclaw Skills for debugging, remote pair programming, or presenting terminal-based workflows without complex network configuration.

The tool creates a bridge between your local environment and a browser interface, ensuring that the terminal experience remains high-fidelity. Whether you are running a Node.js REPL or a complex TUI like Claude Code, remotego handles the terminal emulation and secure transmission seamlessly.

remotego Use Cases

  • Sharing active terminal sessions with remote team members for real-time pair programming or debugging.
  • Accessing local CLI tools from a browser-only environment or mobile device.
  • Exposing specific command-line applications like vim or git logs to a public URL for quick demonstrations.
  • Collaborating on interactive terminal-based AI agents and tools within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills.

How remotego Works

  1. The tool spawns the requested command in a local pseudo-terminal (PTY) to capture all output and handle inputs.
  2. It starts a local HTTP server that serves an xterm.js-powered terminal interface to the browser.
  3. A secure public tunnel is established via localhost.run, providing a globally accessible URL.
  4. The system generates a unique session UUID and automatically opens your default browser to the secure session link.
  5. Any input from the browser is piped back to the local process, while output is streamed to the web interface in real-time.

remotego Setup

Ensure you have Node.js installed on your system. You can install the tool globally or run it directly using npx. This tool is compatible with macOS and Linux environments frequently used with Openclaw Skills.

To install globally:

npm install -g @remotego/remotego

To run without installation:

npx @remotego/remotego bash

Basic usage involves passing the desired command as an argument:

remotego vim

remotego Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages temporary session data and terminal streams. It does not persist long-term logs by default, focusing on real-time transport. Key metadata includes:

Attribute Description
Session ID A random UUID generated per execution for security.
Tunnel URL The dynamic .localhost.run address provided during the session.
PTY Config Handles terminal dimensions (rows/cols) to ensure rendering consistency.
Port Mapping Default local port 7681 or a user-defined custom port.

remotego Advanced Features

  • Custom domain support through the --domain flag for consistent access points.
  • Working directory control using the --cwd flag to launch tools in specific project contexts.
  • Multi-tool mirroring, allowing any binary or script to be wrapped in a web shell.
  • Secure session management with short-lived authentication windows to prevent unauthorized connections to your Openclaw Skills sessions.
