What is Roleplay?

The Roleplay skill enables your AI agent to function as a versatile practice partner, capable of embodying complex personas and managing structured training environments. By utilizing Openclaw Skills, this tool provides a robust framework for character persistence, allowing the agent to remember past interactions, evolve through session memory, and switch between various archetypes or historical figures instantly.

Designed for both professional development and creative exploration, it offers a dual-mode interaction model where users can engage in deep immersion or pause for real-time pedagogical feedback. This ensures that every roleplay session is not just an interaction, but a measurable learning experience backed by structured data.

Roleplay Use Cases

  • Practicing high-stakes professional scenarios such as medical bedside manners, business negotiations, or therapy sessions.
  • Creating and maintaining a library of persistent fictional or historical characters for consistent interaction.
  • Conducting skill-based drills where the agent provides mid-session coaching and post-session performance feedback.
  • Simulating realistic complications and curveballs in a controlled environment to test user adaptability.

How Roleplay Works

  1. The agent initializes a local workspace at ~/roleplay/ to organize character profiles, templates, and logs.
  2. Users trigger the "activate [name]" command to load a specific character profile, transforming the agent's persona and speech patterns.
  3. During the session, the agent monitors intent and utilizes a Situation Router to reference specific practice or safeguard guidelines.
  4. Mid-session commands like "pause" or "coach me" allow the user to receive constructive feedback without breaking the session state.
  5. Upon deactivation, the agent summarizes the encounter, updates the character's long-term memory, and saves session notes for progress tracking.

Roleplay Setup

To begin using this skill within the Openclaw Skills framework, ensure your workspace is prepared:

# Create the necessary directory structure
mkdir -p ~/roleplay/{characters,scenarios,sessions}

# Create your first character profile in ~/roleplay/characters/example.md
# Then, simply command the agent:
"activate example"

Roleplay Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data within a structured directory to ensure persistence across Openclaw Skills sessions:

Component Location Description
Characters ~/roleplay/characters/ Individual markdown files defining traits, speech patterns, and session memory.
Scenarios ~/roleplay/scenarios/ Templates for specific professional or practice contexts.
Session Logs ~/roleplay/sessions/ Historical records of interactions and structured feedback.
Active Marker ~/roleplay/active A pointer file tracking the currently engaged persona.

Roleplay Advanced Features

  • Context-Aware Curveballs: The agent procedurally injects realistic complications based on the current scenario depth.
  • Dynamic Session Memory: Character profiles automatically update after sessions to reflect the evolving relationship with the user.
  • Intent-Based Routing: Automatically switches between character behavior, coaching modes, and ethical safeguards based on user input.
  • Persona Toggle: Seamless transition between "normal mode" and "active character" without losing the current session's logical thread.
