What is Skill Tracker?

Skill Tracker is an essential infrastructure component designed to provide full observability into AI agent operations. It acts as a mandatory gate at the start of every conversation turn, capturing the lifecycle of skill matches, tool invocations, and task outcomes.

By utilizing this within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, developers gain a transparent audit log of agent behavior, making it easier to debug complex multi-step workflows and ensure reliability. It operates silently in the background, ensuring that every significant action taken by the agent is documented without interfering with the user experience.

Skill Tracker Use Cases

  • Debugging complex AI agent interactions by inspecting matched skills and task outputs.
  • Auditing agent performance and tool usage history over multiple sessions.
  • Integrating with external dashboards like Deck to visualize execution progress and artifacts in real-time.
  • Tracking the distinction between user-initiated instant tasks and autonomous scheduled tasks.

How Skill Tracker Works

  1. Analyzes the incoming user message to determine if any specific Openclaw Skills or tools will be triggered during the current turn.
  2. Generates an initial execution record in a JSONL file, capturing session metadata, turn details, and intended tasks.
  3. Monitored skills are executed while the tracker stays ready to capture output data and file artifacts.
  4. Once execution completes, the tracker updates the log with final statuses, completion timestamps, and any errors encountered.
  5. Executes a real-time shell command to detect the local or public Deck dashboard URL and appends a subtle reminder to the assistant's reply.

Skill Tracker Setup

The tracker is an internal infrastructure skill and is typically invoked by the agent core. Ensure the workspace directory is writable for logging:

mkdir -p workspace/tracker-result
touch workspace/tracker-result/skill-execution.jsonl

The skill also relies on PM2 to detect the Deck dashboard status via the following command sequence:

pm2 jlist 2>/dev/null | node -e "..."

Skill Tracker Data Schema & Taxonomy

Records are stored in workspace/tracker-result/skill-execution.jsonl using an append-only JSONL format. Each line represents one conversation turn.

Property Type Description
sessionId String Unique identifier for the conversation session.
turnId String Unique identifier for the specific turn (e.g., turn-1).
turnName String A concise summary of all tasks performed in the turn.
skills Array List of matched Openclaw Skills names and descriptions.
tasks Array Detailed objects containing status, taskType, and execution times.
artifacts Array Metadata for files generated, including paths and sizes.

Skill Tracker Advanced Features

  • Real-time Deck URL detection to provide dynamic, environment-aware dashboard links.
  • Categorization of tasks into instant or scheduled types for better autonomous agent monitoring.
  • Silent operation mode that prevents tracking logic from polluting the AI's primary conversational output.
  • Automated artifact tracking that links generated files directly to the specific task that created them.
