What is Summarize?

The Summarize skill is a versatile command-line utility designed to distill information from a wide variety of sources, including live URLs, local PDF files, images, and YouTube videos. By leveraging leading LLMs from providers like Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic, it allows users to quickly extract key insights without manual reading.

Integrating this tool into Openclaw Skills enhances your workflow by providing instant context for research and development tasks. It serves as a bridge between raw web data and actionable intelligence, making it an essential component for developers and researchers who need to process large volumes of information efficiently.

Summarize Use Cases

  • Rapidly digesting long-form documentation or articles directly from a URL.
  • Generating concise summaries for local PDF reports and image-based data.
  • Extracting transcripts and key points from YouTube videos for quick review.
  • Automating content extraction for machine-readable JSON processing within Openclaw Skills.

How Summarize Works

  1. The user provides a source target, such as a URL, a local file path, or a video link.
  2. The skill identifies the content type and utilizes extraction engines like Firecrawl for blocked sites or Apify for YouTube fallbacks.
  3. Extracted text is sent to the configured AI model (e.g., Gemini, GPT, or Claude) with specific length constraints.
  4. The skill returns a structured summary or raw data based on the requested format.

Summarize Setup

Install the tool via Homebrew to begin using it within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills:

brew tap steipete/tap
brew install summarize

Set your preferred API key in your environment:

export GEMINI_API_KEY="your_key_here"
# Or use OPENAI_API_KEY, ANTHROPIC_API_KEY, or XAI_API_KEY

Optional: Create a configuration file at ~/.summarize/config.json to set a default model:

{ "model": "openai/gpt-4o" }
