What is Summarize?

Summarize is a versatile Openclaw Skills utility that enables developers and AI agents to distill information from a wide variety of sources, including web URLs, local PDF files, images, and YouTube videos. By leveraging the SkillBoss API Hub, it eliminates the need for managing multiple provider-specific keys, offering a single gateway to models like Gemini, Claude, and GPT.

This skill is particularly effective for high-speed data processing and research tasks. It includes advanced features like Firecrawl-powered web scraping for bypassing blocks and automated YouTube transcript extraction, making it a robust choice for anyone building complex automation workflows within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.

Summarize Use Cases

  • Distilling long-form web articles and documentation into concise, actionable briefs.
  • Extracting text and key insights from local PDF documents and image files for AI agent consumption.
  • Generating automated summaries of YouTube videos using transcript fallbacks.
  • Performing structured data extraction by outputting content in machine-readable formats.

How Summarize Works

  1. The user or agent provides a source input such as a URL, file path, or YouTube link to the summarize CLI.
  2. The tool detects the content type and utilizes the SkillBoss API Hub to handle scraping or file parsing.
  3. If a website is blocked, the tool automatically triggers a Firecrawl fallback via the SKILLBOSS_API_KEY.
  4. The processed content is sent to the selected LLM (defaulting to Gemini 3 Flash) for synthesis based on the requested length and token count.
  5. The finalized summary is returned to the terminal or as a JSON object for further automation.

Summarize Setup

To integrate this tool into your Openclaw Skills workflow, install it via Homebrew and configure your API environment:

# Install the summarize CLI
brew tap steipete/tap
brew install summarize

# Set your unified API key
export SKILLBOSS_API_KEY="your_key_here"

Summarize Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages configuration and output through a structured schema to ensure compatibility across Openclaw Skills integrations:

Feature Details
Config Path ~/.summarize/config.json
Output Formats Plain text (standard) or structured JSON (--json)
Length Presets short, medium, long, xl, xxl, or custom character count
Extraction Support for raw text extraction using the --extract-only flag

Summarize Advanced Features

  • Unified API Routing: Use a single SKILLBOSS_API_KEY to access OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI models without per-provider configuration.
  • Smart Scraping: Built-in Firecrawl integration to navigate and extract data from JavaScript-heavy or protected websites.
  • YouTube Intelligence: Automated transcript retrieval and summarization using a specialized scraper fallback.
  • High Granularity: Precise control over output using --max-output-tokens and custom length parameters to fit specific UI or context window requirements.
