What is WorkBuddy Workspace Relay?

WorkBuddy Workspace Relay is an Openclaw Skills package designed for seamless cross-device project continuation, not cloud sync or real-time collaboration. It captures the current WorkBuddy work area, including uncommitted changes, Git state, project configuration, project-specific skills/rules, and agent handoff context, then bundles everything into an encrypted .wbpack that can be moved to another computer and restored safely.

This skill is ideal when you need to switch computers, migrate a project, or preserve an in-progress agent workflow without losing local context. Openclaw Skills emphasizes secure, deterministic handoff: the receiving side restores into a non-destructive workspace and generates a HANDOFF.md so an agent can resume work with the correct operational context.

WorkBuddy Workspace Relay Use Cases

  • Switching to a new laptop and continuing the exact same WorkBuddy project state.
  • Migrating a development workspace between machines while preserving local changes and Git context.
  • Creating a secure encrypted backup of the current work session for later restoration.
  • Passing project context, project rules, and agent handoff notes to a second machine.
  • Resuming work from an existing .wbpack without rebuilding the environment manually.
  • Moving a full WorkBuddy workspace, not just source code, to a different device.

How WorkBuddy Workspace Relay Works

  1. The user triggers the skill with a request to package or restore a WorkBuddy workspace.
  2. The agent reads references/agent-workflow.md first to determine the correct dual-mode entry path.
  3. In packaging mode, the workflow collects the current workspace, uncommitted changes, Git metadata, project configuration, project skills/rules, and handoff context.
  4. The packaging pipeline filters content according to the skill boundary rules, excluding rebuildable artifacts, caches, logs, temporary files, and sensitive system/session state.
  5. scripts/relay.py creates a deterministic archive, performs hashing and archive validation, and encrypts the output using age.
  6. The result is written as a transferable .wbpack file for manual transport to another device.
  7. In restore mode, the .wbpack is decrypted and unpacked into a safe target directory without overwriting an existing restored project.
  8. A HANDOFF.md file is generated so the agent can continue development from the restored context.
  9. If validation fails, the workflow follows the documented failure-handling path rather than guessing the user intent.
  10. If the target device lacks the necessary binary dependencies, the user installs them locally and reruns the restore flow.

WorkBuddy Workspace Relay Setup

  1. Ensure the target machine has the required CLI dependency installed: age.
  2. Confirm age is available on PATH before using the text distribution of this skill.
  3. Read the workflow and format references before packaging or restoring.
  4. Use the provided script for deterministic package creation, encryption, decryption, and validation.
  5. For targets that need bundled binaries, use the full package instead of the text-only ClawHub distribution.
# Verify age is installed
age --version

# Review the workflow entrypoint
cat references/agent-workflow.md

# Review the package structure rules if needed
cat references/package-format.md

# Run the relay script for packaging or restore operations
python3 scripts/relay.py

Notes:

  • This skill does not auto-install or replace system tools.
  • The restore flow should be performed on the target machine where the workspace will continue.
  • Do not rely on file existence alone to decide between package and restore modes; follow the documented workflow.

WorkBuddy Workspace Relay Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Openclaw Skills data model centers on a secure workspace handoff package plus a minimal restore manifest.

Artifact Purpose Notes
.wbpack Encrypted transferable package Contains the captured workspace and handoff payload
HANDOFF.md Post-restore continuation guide Generated on restore so an agent can resume work
references/agent-workflow.md Execution protocol Defines interaction order, packaging/restoration flow, security boundaries, and failure handling
references/package-format.md Archive format reference Used when interpreting .wbpack structure or validation boundaries
scripts/relay.py Core relay engine Handles deterministic packaging, age encryption/decryption, archive validation, and hash checks

Default inclusion scope:

  • source code
  • documentation
  • assets
  • databases
  • .git
  • agent configuration
  • project-local skills
  • project rules
  • uncommitted modifications
  • project-local .env files

Default exclusions:

  • rebuildable dependencies
  • caches
  • build artifacts
  • coverage outputs
  • logs
  • system temp files
  • existing .wbpack files
  • symbolic links

Explicitly not migrated:

  • model hidden state
  • raw conversation process state
  • system keyrings
  • browser login state
  • WorkBuddy account credentials
  • private workspace switch interfaces
  • cloud sync state
  • real-time multi-user collaboration state
  • ordinary Git sync/deploy behavior

WorkBuddy Workspace Relay Advanced Features

  • Deterministic packaging and restore flow for reliable cross-device handoff in Openclaw Skills.
  • Encrypted .wbpack output using age for secure transport.
  • Hash validation and archive integrity checks to reduce restore errors.
  • Non-destructive restore behavior that avoids overwriting an existing restored directory.
  • Automatic generation of HANDOFF.md to keep agent continuity intact after migration.
  • Explicit boundary controls for what is included and excluded, improving safety and repeatability.
  • Dual-mode execution support: package the current workspace or restore from an existing package.
  • Designed for agent continuation workflows, preserving project rules and local context alongside code.
