What is World Builder?

World Builder is a subordinate meta-skill in the meta-skill-system that transforms a raw world concept or a set of character skills into a complete, executable world-building package.

Within Openclaw Skills, it serves as the reusable world-construction layer for downstream characters, factions, quests, and settings. It organizes every world across three layers - entity, society, and abstraction - then fills 12 orthogonal dimensions with built-in logic checks, calibration rules, and cross-dimensional consistency validation so the result is a self-contained world rather than disconnected lore.

It supports two workflows: independent generation from scratch and character extraction from multiple Character Builder outputs. The output is a standardized world skill file, complete with references, routing logic, domain checks, and graceful degradation paths for read-only or offline environments.

World Builder Use Cases

  • Starting from a short prompt and needing a fully realized setting with internal logic.
  • Consolidating shared lore from two or more character skills into one coherent world layer.
  • Designing TRPG campaigns, fiction universes, game settings, or transmedia IP foundations.
  • Reconciling geography, history, rules, species, resources, politics, economics, culture, cognition, aesthetics, and world dynamics.
  • Validating that a world is self-consistent before generating characters or downstream content in Openclaw Skills workflows.
  • Recovering a shared world from independently authored character files without losing local character specificity.

How World Builder Works

  1. Detect the input route with wb-03: if character skill files are present, switch to Mode B; otherwise use Mode A for independent generation.
  2. Run tri-axis judgment to classify complexity, content type, and innovation needs, then calibrate R1-R5 priorities for the target world type.
  3. Fill the entity layer in parallel across W1-W3: space/time, rules/life, and matter/technology, while checking for internal contradictions.
  4. Build the society layer W4 from the stabilized entity layer, covering culture, politics, and economics.
  5. Fill the abstraction layer W5-W6: cognition plus aesthetics/dynamics, then validate cross-layer cause-and-effect chains.
  6. Assemble the final world skill output in W7, run the final wb-70 integrity check, and emit the completed world file or a read-only world report if persistence is unavailable.

World Builder Setup

  1. Create the skill directory and references folder in your Openclaw Skills workspace.
  2. Copy SKILL.md and the three reference files into place.
  3. If you plan to use Mode B, ensure character skill files are available under .workbuddy/skills/ or another path that matches the input detector.
  4. If your tool cannot load skill directories, flatten the skill into a single prompt file.
mkdir -p .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/references
cp SKILL.md .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/
cp references/world-catalog.md .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/references/
cp references/world-requirements.md .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/references/
cp references/exemplars.md .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/references/
# Optional: export a single prompt for tools without skill-directory support
cat .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/SKILL.md \
  .workbuddy/skills/world-builder/references/*.md \
  > world-builder-prompt.md

W1 Space / Time Geography, climate, chronology, eras Causal and physical consistency
W2 Rules / Life Physics, magic, species, ecosystems Self-sufficient rule systems
W3 Matter / Technology Resources, materials, energy, inventions Resource-path alignment
W4 Culture / Politics / Economy Language, customs, institutions, trade Social coherence and power logic
W5 Cognition Belief, science, education, knowledge transmission Knowledge-system consistency
W6 Aesthetics / Dynamics Art, architecture, beauty norms, evolution, cycles Style-resource alignment and future trajectory
W7 Integration Final assembly, persistence, and checks Full 12-dimensional completeness

Metadata taxonomy

  • Mode metadata: A independent generation, B character extraction, and mixed-input precedence rules.
  • Calibration metadata: R1 information density, R2 creativity, R3 interactivity, R4规范性, R5 iterability.
  • Operation metadata: S search, C cognition, A action, O organize, I interact, G guard.
  • Check IDs: wb-03 routing, wb-12/22/32/43/51/62 per-domain cross-dimension checks, and wb-70 final integrity.

Generated outputs

  • A completed world skill file with consistent world layers and references.
  • A read-only world report in degradation modes when file writing is unavailable.
  • Optional flattened prompt output for tools that do not support skill-directory loading.

World Builder Advanced Features

  • Dual-mode orchestration for independent world generation or shared-layer extraction from multiple character skills.
  • Automatic input routing based on file-path heuristics and mixed-input precedence rules.
  • Domain-parallel filling of W1-W3, followed by staged W4-W6 synthesis for faster iteration.
  • Cross-dimensional coupling checks that trace cause-and-effect across geography, resources, politics, culture, cognition, and aesthetics.
  • Graceful degradation when search, interaction, or file-write access is unavailable.
  • Prompt flattening for tools that cannot load multi-file skill directories.
  • Partial generation support for a single domain, such as rules-only, magic-system-only, or culture-only design.
  • Built for reusable Openclaw Skills pipelines that need a durable world foundation before character generation.
