What is Narrative Builder?

Within Openclaw Skills, Narrative Builder is a composition engine that consumes existing World Builder and Character Builder outputs and arranges them into a story structure. It does not invent lore from scratch; it transforms known world and character constraints into scenes, arcs, and events that feel causally connected.

It is designed for downstream narrative orchestration: if you already have a setting and cast, the skill selects a framework, picks a point of view, threads themes through the plot, and validates the result for consistency. The outcome can be delivered as scene-by-scene breakdowns, chapter outlines, or a complete narrative draft.

Narrative Builder Use Cases

  • You already have world-building and character-building outputs and need a story assembled from them.
  • You want a fast direct narrative draft from a free-form story prompt without building a full character library first.
  • You need character-driven orchestration where motives, relationships, and conflicts determine the plot.
  • You are building long-form fiction, serial fiction, or an IP universe that must stay consistent across scenes.
  • You need a structured outline with pacing, conflict escalation, thematic threading, and dialogue planning.
  • You need graceful fallback output when world or character dependencies are incomplete or unavailable.
  • You are using Openclaw Skills as a multi-skill workflow and need a downstream narrative layer that consumes upstream assets.

How Narrative Builder Works

  1. Detect the input mode (nb-03) and route the request into Mode A for direct narrative construction or Mode B for character-driven orchestration.
  2. Ingest world data and character data in parallel at the input layer (nb-10, nb-11), then validate completeness and compatibility with the requested story.
  3. Select the story frame in the structure layer (nb-20, nb-21, nb-22, nb-23): framework, point of view, pacing, conflict distribution, and structural consistency.
  4. Compose the narrative in the composition layer (nb-30, nb-31, nb-32, nb-33, nb-34) by turning structure into event chains, scenes, theme threads, dialogue, and narration.
  5. Validate the draft in the output-check layer (nb-40, nb-41, nb-42) for causality, pacing, theme continuity, point-of-view consistency, and character voice alignment.
  6. Assemble and format the final deliverable in the output layer (nb-50, nb-51, nb-52) as scene-by-scene or chapter-by-chapter prose, or degrade to a narrative framework when dependencies are missing.

Narrative Builder Setup

Openclaw Skills loads this as a markdown skill rather than a package, so setup is mostly directory layout, reference population, and dependency readiness.

  1. Create the skill folder and references directory.
mkdir -p .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/references
cp /path/to/SKILL.md .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/SKILL.md
  1. Add the three reference documents required by the skill and fill them with the task catalog, requirements, and exemplars.
touch .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/references/narrative-catalog.md \
  .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/references/narrative-requirements.md \
  .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/references/exemplars.md
  1. Populate the references so the agent can resolve the N0-N5 pipeline and the nb task IDs before execution.

  2. If your agent cannot load skills from directories, export a single prompt artifact for Openclaw Skills-compatible workflows.

cat .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/SKILL.md \
  .workbuddy/skills/narrative-builder/references/*.md \
  > narrative-builder.prompt.md
  1. Verify that World Builder and Character Builder outputs are reachable before running narrative composition; Narrative Builder depends on them when available.

Narrative Builder Data Schema & Taxonomy

Core artifacts

Artifact Purpose Key content
SKILL.md Skill contract and execution rules name, author, description, trigger words, pipeline overview, routing rules
references/narrative-catalog.md Task and dependency catalog domain map, dependency topology, meta-operation mappings, step ordering
references/narrative-requirements.md Per-task requirements required/optional inputs, sequencing rules, constraints, validation criteria
references/exemplars.md Narrative examples structural patterns, scene templates, voice references, composition examples
Runtime output Final deliverable markdown story report, outline, scene list, chapter draft, or degraded framework

Metadata taxonomy

  • Modes: Mode A for direct narrative construction; Mode B for character-driven orchestration.
  • Domains: N0 request analysis, N1 input integration, N2 structure design, N3 composition, N4 validation, N5 output.
  • Task IDs: nb-03 route detection; nb-10 world import; nb-11 character import; nb-20 to nb-23 structure; nb-30 to nb-34 composition; nb-40 to nb-42 validation; nb-50 to nb-52 packaging.
  • Control signals: sequential execution, parallel-only input ingestion, no skipped layers, local fixes inside the current layer, and explicit user confirmation for key decisions.
  • Referenced dependencies: World Builder supplies setting constraints; Character Builder supplies motive, relationship, and dynamics constraints; Narrative Builder composes the final story from those inputs.

Output shape

The skill normally emits a single Markdown narrative deliverable with:

  1. Request analysis and mode selection
  2. Story framework and POV choice
  3. Event chain or scene plan
  4. Theme threading and dialogue design
  5. Validation notes
  6. Final narrative output

The skill itself does not persist separate generated files unless you explicitly export the prompt or save the final draft.

Narrative Builder Advanced Features

  • Automatic mode routing between direct narrative construction and character-driven orchestration.
  • Four-layer pipeline with strict stage ordering and parallel-only input ingestion.
  • Multi-skill orchestration across World Builder and Character Builder outputs.
  • Graceful degradation to outline-only or template-based output when dependencies are missing.
  • Built-in checks for causality, pacing, theme continuity, point-of-view consistency, and voice alignment.
  • Scene-by-scene and chapter-by-chapter formatting for flexible downstream publishing.
  • Prompt export support for tools that cannot load skill directories.
  • Fits Openclaw Skills meta-skill workflows where a downstream skill composes and validates upstream assets.
