What is X-Reader?

X-Reader is a technical utility designed to bridge the gap between AI agents and social media content on X (formerly Twitter). By bypassing the requirement for an official developer account, it allows for seamless data retrieval through two distinct methods: Nitter for free, anonymous scraping and RapidAPI for high-fidelity, structured data.

As part of the broader library of Openclaw Skills, X-Reader provides a standardized way to ingest social signals into your local workflows. It is built to be lightweight, requiring only Python 3.8 and the requests library, making it an ideal choice for developers who need to integrate real-time social data without the administrative overhead of the official X API.

X-Reader Use Cases

  • Automating the collection of public status updates for sentiment analysis.
  • Monitoring specific X threads to feed context into AI-driven research reports using Openclaw Skills.
  • Archiving historical post data for digital marketing audits.
  • Developing browser-based or CLI tools that require tweet metadata like like counts and timestamps.

How X-Reader Works

  1. The user inputs a specific X.com or Twitter.com status URL into the tool.
  2. The system checks for the presence of a RAPIDAPI_KEY environment variable.
  3. In Nitter Mode (default), the skill scrapes a public Nitter instance to retrieve post text and basic metadata.
  4. In RapidAPI Mode, the skill sends a request to a third-party API provider for a more detailed and stable JSON response.
  5. The skill parses the raw data into a consistent JSON schema.
  6. The final output is delivered to the console or calling agent for further processing.

X-Reader Setup

# Install the required Python library
pip install requests

# (Optional) To use the high-detail RapidAPI mode, set your API key
export RAPIDAPI_KEY="your_api_key_here"

# Run the skill with a tweet URL
python3 x-reader.py "https://x.com/username/status/1234567890"

X-Reader Data Schema & Taxonomy
