Overview

Keeping social media feeds fresh with relevant news can be time-consuming, especially when managing character limits and media uploads for diverse platforms like X (Twitter) and Facebook. This specialized n8n workflow solves this by fully automating the RSS ingestion, filtering, and cross-posting process.

This robust n8n automation utilizes the PostPulse integration to seamlessly handle media file uploads and publishing to all connected accounts. It uses custom logic within an n8n node to ensure the content is truncated correctly (e.g., 280 characters for Twitter) before publishing, ensuring optimal engagement and saving countless hours previously spent on manual formatting. This powerful n8n workflow demonstrates how to build sophisticated content pipelines.

How it Works

The process begins with the "Schedule Trigger" n8n trigger, configured to run, for instance, daily at 9:00 AM. Simultaneously, the workflow performs two core actions:

  1. Data Acquisition: The "RSS Feed Read" n8n node fetches the latest articles from the configured URL.

  2. Account Retrieval: The "Get connected accounts" PostPulse n8n node retrieves a list of all target social media profiles.

Next, the "Limit to N Post" function n8n node restricts the processing batch size (e.g., to the top 1 article). The initial "If" n8n node filters these articles, ensuring only news published within the last day is processed.

Articles then hit the "Media Check IF" n8n node. This crucial step determines if the article has an image or video attached. The workflow splits into two paths:

Path 1 (With Media): The content passes through the "Upload media" PostPulse n8n node. A dynamic polling loop checks the status via the "Get upload status" n8n node until the media is ready. The item is then merged with the list of accounts using the "Merge" and "Merge1" n8n nodes. Finally, the "Publish Post" n8n node executes, using a custom JavaScript function to optimize the text length based on the required platform (e.g., truncating content perfectly for X/Twitter).
Path 2 (Text Only): The article skips the media steps, merges with the accounts using the "Merge (no media + accounts)" n8n node, and is published via the "Publish Post (text only)" n8n node, applying similar platform-specific text truncation logic.

Installation Guide

To deploy this comprehensive n8n workflow:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON code and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. PostPulse Credentials: You must set up your PostPulse OAuth2 API credentials. Click on any PostPulse n8n node (like 'Upload media') and configure the connection.

  3. RSS Setup: Update the URL in the "RSS Feed Read" n8n node to your desired news source.

  4. Flow Customization: Review the "Limit to N Post" function n8n node and adjust the const limit variable if you wish to process more than one article per scheduled run.

  5. Activation: Once configurations are complete, activate the n8n workflow. The "Schedule Trigger" n8n trigger will handle running the automation at the set time.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): Sets the automation to run daily (default 9:00 AM UTC). This is the starting point for this daily n8n workflow.
RSS Feed Read (n8n node): Fetches all entries from the configured RSS feed URL.
Limit to N Post (Function n8n node): Uses custom JavaScript (items.slice(0, limit)) to enforce a hard limit on the number of articles processed, preventing accidental flood publishing.
If (n8n node): Core flow control. Filters items to ensure the pubDate falls within the previous day, preventing reprocessing old news.
Media Check IF (n8n node): Contains complex expression logic to check for image or video URLs across multiple standard and proprietary RSS fields (e.g., enclosure.url, media:content).
Upload media (PostPulse n8n node): Handles the external upload of media files based on the detected URL to the PostPulse service.
Get connected accounts (PostPulse n8n node): Retrieves all connected social media profiles from your PostPulse account, allowing the subsequent publishing n8n node to iterate over them.
Publish Post / Publish Post (text only) (PostPulse n8n node): These PostPulse n8n nodes are the final action, scheduling or drafting the post. They use sophisticated functions to dynamically shorten the article content to meet the specific character requirements of platforms like X/Twitter or Blue Sky, maximizing the efficiency of the n8n templates.
