What is acpx?

acpx is a specialized, headless client for the Agent Client Protocol (ACP), engineered to facilitate robust communication between agents without the overhead of PTY scraping. This tool is a cornerstone for developers working with Openclaw Skills, providing a stable interface for managing persistent, multi-turn sessions and executing one-shot tasks across various AI agents.

By offering structured streaming output and deep session management, acpx allows developers to integrate advanced AI capabilities directly into their terminal workflows or automated scripts. It handles the complexities of the ACP handshake, filesystem requests, and terminal interactions, making it an essential utility for anyone building or orchestrating AI agents using Openclaw Skills.

acpx Use Cases

  • Managing persistent, multi-turn coding sessions within specific repository scopes.
  • Executing one-shot agent tasks for repo summarization or automated code reviews.
  • Orchestrating parallel AI workflows using named sessions for different tasks like backend fixes and documentation.
  • Automating agent interactions through CI/CD pipelines using structured JSON output.
  • Queueing multiple prompts for sequential execution without manual intervention within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem.

How acpx Works

  1. The user initiates a prompt or command through the CLI, specifying an agent and optional session name.
  2. acpx checks for an existing session scope based on the agent, current working directory, and name.
  3. If a session exists, it reconnects; otherwise, it initializes a new ACP session and establishes an authenticated handshake.
  4. Prompts are added to a local IPC queue, where a queue owner process manages execution and communicates with the agent.
  5. The agent processes the request, and acpx streams structured updates back to the user or script.
  6. Upon completion, session metadata and history are stored locally for future resume capabilities supported by Openclaw Skills.

acpx Setup

To start using this tool with Openclaw Skills, install it globally via npm:

npm i -g acpx

Initialize your configuration to customize default agents and permissions:

acpx config init

Verify your setup and inspect the resolved configuration:

acpx config show

acpx Data Schema & Taxonomy

acpx maintains a structured data hierarchy to ensure session persistence and reliability within Openclaw Skills:

Component Location Description
Global Config ~/.acpx/config.json Stores default agent, permissions, and auth credentials.
Project Config <cwd>/.acpxrc.json Project-specific overrides for agents and settings.
Session Records ~/.acpx/sessions/*.json JSON files containing metadata, state, and turn history.
Queue IPC ~/.acpx/queues/ Unix sockets or named pipes for cross-process communication.

acpx Advanced Features

  • Support for custom ACP adapter commands via the raw agent escape hatch.
  • Granular permission control including auto-approval of read operations while prompting for writes.
  • Machine-readable NDJSON event streams for complex piping and orchestration via tools like jq.
  • Cooperative cancellation handling to gracefully interrupt agent turns without corrupting session state.
  • Multi-agent registry allowing quick switching between various AI models compatible with Openclaw Skills.
