What is bitclawden?

bitclawden is a specialized skill designed to bridge the gap between AI agents and secure credential management. It provides a structured interface for interacting with the Bitwarden vault using the bw CLI and jq utility. This skill allows agents to look up, create, and modify login credentials, secure notes, and identity data without manual intervention, streamlining secure development workflows.

By integrating this tool into your automation stack, you ensure that sensitive information is handled with precision and security. As part of the broader ecosystem of Openclaw Skills, it emphasizes programmatic control over secrets while maintaining strict guardrails to prevent accidental exposure of sensitive data in logs or chat interfaces.

bitclawden Use Cases

  • Automating the retrieval of API keys and database credentials during development.
  • Generating and storing unique, high-entropy passwords for new service registrations.
  • Updating existing vault items with new passwords or metadata systematically.
  • Accessing TOTP codes for automated multi-factor authentication flows within Openclaw Skills.
  • Organizing project-specific credentials into folders for better secret management.

How bitclawden Works

  1. The skill first verifies the environment by checking for the installation of the bw binary and the jq utility.
  2. It assesses the vault status to determine if the user is authenticated and if the vault is currently unlocked.
  3. If locked, the agent prompts the user to perform an unlock and provide the necessary session token via the BW_SESSION environment variable.
  4. Once unlocked, the skill executes specific commands such as bw get, bw list, or bw create to interact with vault items.
  5. For modifications, it pipes JSON data through jq for precise field updates and encodes it before committing changes to the vault.
  6. Finally, it performs a synchronization to ensure the local state is consistent with the Bitwarden cloud servers.

bitclawden Setup

To get started with this skill, ensure the Bitwarden CLI is installed and your session is authenticated.

# Install the Bitwarden CLI binary
PLATFORM=$(uname -s | tr '[:upper:]' '[:lower:]'); [ "$PLATFORM" = 'darwin' ] && PLATFORM='macos'; curl -sL "https://vault.bitwarden.com/download/?app=cli&platform=${PLATFORM}" -o /tmp/bw.zip && unzip -o /tmp/bw.zip -d ~/.local/bin/ && chmod +x ~/.local/bin/bw && rm /tmp/bw.zip

# Unlock your vault and set the session variable
export BW_SESSION=$(bw unlock --raw)

This setup allows Openclaw Skills to interact securely with your encrypted data.

bitclawden Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages data according to the Bitwarden object schema. The primary item types are classified as follows:

Type ID Category Description
1 Login Stores usernames, passwords, URIs, and TOTP seeds.
2 Secure Note Stores encrypted text blocks.
3 Card Stores payment card information.
4 Identity Stores personal contact and identification details.

All data is processed as JSON and must be encoded using the bw encode command before creation or updates.

bitclawden Advanced Features

  • Programmatic creation of secure folders to categorize credentials for different Openclaw Skills projects.
  • Advanced password generation using flags for length, special characters, and passphrases.
  • Deep JSON manipulation via jq for updating specific nested fields within a login item.
  • Real-time TOTP generation to handle 2FA challenges in automated browser or CLI workflows.
  • Comprehensive search capabilities across names, URIs, and notes using the Bitwarden search engine.
