What is X-Read?

X-Read is a powerful utility within the ecosystem of Openclaw Skills designed to fetch content from X (formerly Twitter) without the need for API keys, user authentication, or consuming search credits. It leverages a headless browser to render public permalinks, ensuring that developers and AI agents can access tweet text, thread replies, and media attachments programmatically.

By using this tool, users can bypass the complexities of social media integrations while maintaining a high-quality data stream for their AI agents. This skill is particularly valuable for those who need to stay updated on social trends or research specific discussions on X. Using Openclaw Skills like x-read ensures that your workflows remain efficient and focused on data extraction rather than account management.

X-Read Use Cases

  • Extracting multi-tweet threads for research and data analysis.
  • Summarizing long-form articles posted directly on the X platform.
  • Capturing media links and image ALT text from public posts for archival.
  • Integrating real-time social media data into automated workflows without an API.
  • Monitoring specific public status updates while avoiding login walls.

How X-Read Works

  1. The skill initializes a sandboxed Puppeteer instance with a realistic user-agent to navigate to the provided X permalink.
  2. It waits for the page to render specific DOM elements, such as the tweet data-testid attributes.
  3. The script identifies the primary tweet and captures up to three subsequent replies to maintain thread context.
  4. Metadata including display names, handles, timestamps, and media URLs (with large image parameters) are extracted.
  5. The captured content is synthesized into a structured markdown summary for immediate use in chat interfaces or documentation.

X-Read Setup

To deploy this skill, you need to have the environment configured for browser-based automation. Use the following commands to test and run the skill:

# Navigate to your local Openclaw Skills directory
# Run the skill manually to verify a specific tweet
openclaw use x-read read_tweet --url <YOUR_X_URL_HERE>

Ensure that your environment has Chromium or a compatible browser installed for Puppeteer to function correctly.

X-Read Data Schema & Taxonomy

X-Read produces a structured markdown output that follows a clear hierarchy. This makes it easy for Openclaw Skills to pass data between different agents.

Component Data Extracted
Source The full URL of the X permalink.
Metadata Author name, @handle, and ISO timestamp.
Content Full tweet text and any appended long-form article text.
Media Markdown formatted image links with ALT text and card URLs.
Context Up to three threaded replies following the main tweet.

X-Read Advanced Features

  • Sandboxed Chromium execution for secure, isolated web scraping.
  • Long-form article support that appends extended content to the primary summary.
  • Automatic media quality optimization by retaining the large image parameter.
  • Read-only operation ensuring no accidental interactions like likes or posts.
  • Custom DOM selector logic specifically tuned for X's modern web architecture.
