What is CLI Hub?

CLI Hub acts as the ultimate discovery layer for your AI agent's terminal capabilities. It serves as a unified interface across multiple platforms, allowing agents to intelligently handle any CLI tool whether an official skill exists for it or not. By bridging the gap between raw binaries and structured agent knowledge, it ensures your workflows remain uninterrupted regardless of the complexity of the command-line tools involved.

This skill is a core component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, designed to prevent context window bloat by using a tiered priority system. It differentiates between simple conversational queries and technical execution, ensuring that the agent only engages its CLI logic when a functional task is required, such as looking up subcommands or parsing live help output.

CLI Hub Use Cases

  • Automatically discovering and registering newly installed system binaries for agent use.
  • Providing a fallback mechanism for tools that do not have dedicated official skill files.
  • Standardizing CLI interactions across different IDEs like Claude Code, Cursor, and Aider.
  • Caching complex help documentation and subcommand structures to speed up future agent responses.
  • Troubleshooting unfamiliar CLI outputs by parsing live help data on the fly.

How CLI Hub Works

  1. Platform Detection: Upon activation, the skill identifies the host environment (e.g., OpenClaw, Cursor, or Claude Code) to locate the correct skill and registry roots.
  2. Priority Resolution: The agent checks for an authoritative official skill; if missing, it queries the local JSON registry.
  3. Live Discovery: If the tool is unknown, the skill executes a live --help command to understand the tool's syntax and parameters.
  4. Registration: Once a tool's usage is parsed, it is added to the registry to enable instant cached lookups for future queries.
  5. Command Execution: The skill constructs and executes the precise command-line string based on the gathered technical metadata.

CLI Hub Setup

To integrate CLI Hub into your environment, ensure the Python registry script is accessible within your Openclaw Skills directory:

# Check for existing registry script
find ~/.agents/skills/cli-hub -name cli-registry.py

# Manually register a tool to get started
python3 cli-registry.py register jq --binary /usr/bin/jq --desc "JSON processor"

# Run a system-wide scan for known tools
python3 cli-registry.py discover

CLI Hub Data Schema & Taxonomy

CLI Hub utilizes a structured registry system to maintain technical metadata without the overhead of heavy frontmatter. Data is organized as follows:

Component Description Format
Skill Root Platform-specific directory for the SKILL.md logic File Path
Registry Root Storage for tool-specific metadata and cached help JSON
Registry Entry Includes binary path, subcommands, flags, and raw help strings Key-Value Pairs
Platforms.md Reference file for cross-platform directory mapping Markdown

CLI Hub Advanced Features

  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Supports OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, and Aider out of the box.
  • Automated Discovery: Scan your entire system path to instantly populate the agent's tool library.
  • Smart Deferral: Automatically yields to official Openclaw Skills to ensure the most specific and optimized logic is always used.
  • Environment Overrides: Use CLI_HUB_REGISTRY and CLI_HUB_SKILLS environment variables for custom self-hosted configurations.
  • Machine-Readable Metadata: Exports tool info in JSON format for multi-agent collaboration and external tool chaining.
