What is CLI Hub?

CLI Hub serves as a central intelligence layer for command-line interfaces, acting as a bridge between AI agents and local binaries. It enables tools like OpenClaw, Claude Code, and Aider to understand the syntax, subcommands, and flags of any CLI tool on your system without requiring manual configuration for every individual utility.

By implementing a structured priority resolution system, CLI Hub ensures that agents always have the most accurate information. It intelligently balances dedicated official skills with a local registry cache and real-time live discovery via help commands, making it an essential component of the Openclaw Skills ecosystem for power users and developers.

CLI Hub Use Cases

  • Automating data extraction with tools like jq or xsv when no specific agent skill exists.
  • Rapidly onboarding new CLI binaries into an AI agent's repertoire through automatic discovery.
  • Providing a fallback mechanism for AI agents to understand obscure or custom internal CLI tools.
  • Centralizing CLI documentation and subcommand maps across different AI coding environments like Cursor and Codex.

How CLI Hub Works

  1. Trigger and Filter: The skill identifies a CLI-related request and performs a sanity check to ensure the task isn't purely conversational or already handled by a specialized skill.
  2. Platform Detection: It automatically detects the host environment (OpenClaw, Claude Code, etc.) to locate the correct skill and registry roots.
  3. Priority Resolution: The agent first checks for an authoritative SKILL.md for the specific tool; if absent, it queries the CLI Hub registry.
  4. Live Discovery: If the tool is unknown, it executes a live --help command and parses the output on the fly to understand the required syntax.
  5. Registration: Once a tool is understood, the agent can register it into the JSON registry to cache subcommands and flags for near-instant future access.

CLI Hub Setup

CLI Hub auto-detects your platform, but you can manually point to your registry using environment variables. To initialize or manage your Openclaw Skills for CLI tools, use the following commands:

# Find the registry script
SCRIPT=$(find ~/.agents/skills/cli-hub -name cli-registry.py)

# Register a new tool manually
python3 $SCRIPT register jq --desc "Command-line JSON processor"

# Automatically scan your system for known binaries
python3 $SCRIPT discover

# List all tools currently managed by the hub
python3 $SCRIPT list --format json

CLI Hub Data Schema & Taxonomy

CLI Hub organizes data using a lightweight JSON registry. It avoids complex frontmatter to ensure high-speed machine readability.

Data Component Format Description
Registry Entry JSON Stores binary path, description, subcommands, and cached help text.
Skill Root Directory Platform-specific path where the core logic and SKILL.md reside.
Registry Root Directory Storage location for the <tool>.json metadata files.
Command Map Key-Value Maps specific user intents to parsed CLI flags and arguments.

CLI Hub Advanced Features

  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Supports OpenClaw, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, and Aider out of the box.
  • Dynamic Live Parsing: Capable of understanding usage instructions for unregistered tools by parsing stdout from help flags.
  • Automated Discovery: Includes a discover command to auto-scan the system PATH and populate the registry.
  • Environment Overrides: Advanced users can redirect the registry and skill roots using CLI_HUB_REGISTRY and CLI_HUB_SKILLS variables.
