What is CLI Hub?

CLI Hub is a robust discovery gateway designed to act as the central management layer for command-line tools within AI agent environments. It provides a standardized way for agents to interact with any CLI, bridging the gap between raw binary execution and structured tool usage. By integrating with Openclaw Skills, it ensures that your AI coding assistant can intelligently handle command lookups, understand subcommands, and parse help documentation on the fly.

The skill operates with a discovery-first philosophy. It automatically detects the host platform—whether it be OpenClaw, Claude Code, Cursor, or Aider—and configures its registry paths accordingly. This ensures that developer workflows remain consistent regardless of the specific IDE or agent being used, providing a unified interface for system-wide tool automation.

CLI Hub Use Cases

  • Automatically discovering and registering newly installed system binaries for AI use.
  • Providing structured subcommand and flag data to AI agents for tools like jq, ripgrep, or xsv.
  • Acting as a fallback mechanism when a specific official skill for a CLI tool is not present.
  • Standardizing CLI interactions across different AI coding environments like Cursor and Claude Code.

How CLI Hub Works

  1. Trigger Assessment: The skill evaluates if a user request involves a CLI tool and checks if a dedicated official skill already exists for that specific tool.
  2. Platform Detection: It identifies the runtime environment (OpenClaw, Claude Code, etc.) to locate the correct skill and registry roots.
  3. Priority Resolution: It looks for an authoritative SKILL.md; if missing, it queries the local JSON registry for cached command data.
  4. Live Discovery: If the tool is unknown, it executes a live --help command and parses the output in real-time to understand usage.
  5. Caching: Once a tool's usage is understood, it can be registered into the local database for instant access in future sessions.

CLI Hub Setup

To set up CLI Hub within your Openclaw Skills directory, ensure the cli-registry.py script is accessible. You can manually register tools or run a system-wide discovery scan:

# Discovery of all known binaries on the system
python3 cli-registry.py discover

# Manual registration of a specific tool
python3 cli-registry.py register jq --desc "Lightweight and flexible command-line JSON processor"

# List all currently managed tools
python3 cli-registry.py list --format json

CLI Hub Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data using a hierarchical priority system and a machine-readable JSON registry.

Component Format Purpose
Skill Root Markdown Official documentation and authoritative instructions.
Registry Root JSON Cached tool metadata including subcommands, flags, and binary paths.
CLI Registry Script Python Logic for discovery, registration, and lookup operations.
Platform Config Path Map Maps environment-specific directories (e.g., ~/.openclaw/cli-registry/) to the skill.

CLI Hub Advanced Features

  • Multi-Platform Support: Seamlessly transitions between Openclaw Skills, Claude Code, and Cursor environments.
  • Dynamic Discovery: Auto-scans the system PATH to populate the registry without manual entry.
  • Intelligent Fallback: Uses live parsing of --help outputs as ground truth when documentation is missing.
  • Environment Overrides: Supports CLI_HUB_REGISTRY and CLI_HUB_SKILLS environment variables for custom self-hosted or containerized setups.
