What is Desktop Notify?

Desktop Notify is an Openclaw Skills utility for signaling task completion with a native system toast plus an audible cue. It detects Windows, macOS, and Linux at runtime and uses the most appropriate system API, so your agent can signal completion without any third-party notification dependency.

It is especially valuable for long-running builds, background scripts, and assistant workflows where visual feedback matters. The skill also supports a one-time setup that writes a persistent auto-notify rule into the user's own ~/.workbuddy/MEMORY.md, making future conversations and projects automatically emit completion alerts.

Desktop Notify Use Cases

  • A long-running coding task, report, or batch job finishes and you want a visible + audible completion cue.
  • You need a simple "call me when it's done" workflow for background agent work.
  • A script or tool completes outside the foreground and should alert the user immediately.
  • You want a cross-platform notification path that works on Windows, macOS, and Linux without third-party apps.
  • You want to enable a persistent, user-level auto-notify rule once and reuse it across future conversations.

How Desktop Notify Works

  1. The task or agent finishes and invokes the notifier with a message and optional title.
  2. The script detects the operating system and routes to the native path: WinRT Toast on Windows, osascript on macOS, or notify-send on Linux.
  3. Windows also plays a completion sound; Linux falls back to a terminal bell and console output if notify-send is unavailable.
  4. Optional setup writes a durable auto-notify instruction into ~/.workbuddy/MEMORY.md under the <!-- desktop-notify-auto --> marker.
  5. Because the rule lives in user memory, future projects and chats inherit the behavior automatically without repeat manual steps.

Desktop Notify Setup

  1. Place the skill directory in your skills repository or agent skill path so SKILL.md and scripts/ are discoverable.
  2. Run the one-time setup script for your OS; it writes the auto-notify rule into your user memory file and is safe to run repeatedly.
  3. Trigger notifications manually with the notifier script whenever you want an explicit desktop alert.
  4. To disable global auto-notify, remove the <!-- desktop-notify-auto --> block from ~/.workbuddy/MEMORY.md.

Windows

PowerShell -File "<skill_dir>/scripts/setup.ps1"

macOS / Linux

bash "<skill_dir>/scripts/setup.sh"

Manual notification examples

PowerShell -File "<skill_dir>/scripts/notify.ps1" -Message "Report generated" -Title "WorkBuddy"
bash "<skill_dir>/scripts/notify.sh" "Report generated" "WorkBuddy"

Note: the PowerShell scripts are saved as UTF-8 with BOM to avoid Windows PowerShell 5.1 encoding issues.

Desktop Notify Data Schema & Taxonomy

Artifact Role Data / metadata
SKILL.md Skill manifest Declares the skill name (desktop-notify), description, operational guidance, and platform notes.
scripts/notify.ps1 Windows notifier Accepts -Message and -Title; defaults to title WorkBuddy and a task-complete body when omitted.
scripts/notify.sh macOS/Linux notifier Accepts $1 as message/body and $2 as title; uses osascript on macOS and notify-send on Linux.
scripts/setup.ps1 Windows bootstrap Writes the auto-notify rule into the user's memory file; idempotent.
scripts/setup.sh macOS/Linux bootstrap Writes the auto-notify rule into the user's memory file; idempotent.
~/.workbuddy/MEMORY.md Persistence layer Stores the global rule block flagged by <!-- desktop-notify-auto -->.
  • Notification payload taxonomy: title, message/body, delivery backend, and fallback mode.
  • Persistence taxonomy: user-level memory block plus the <!-- desktop-notify-auto --> marker.
  • Runtime taxonomy: WinRT Toast, AppleScript/osascript, notify-send, or terminal bell fallback.
  • Deployment model: local-only, offline, and no third-party package dependencies.

Desktop Notify Advanced Features

  • Cross-platform OS detection with native APIs and graceful fallback.
  • One-time global automation that persists through the user's own memory file.
  • Idempotent setup scripts; repeated runs do not duplicate the rule block.
  • Manual and automated notification entrypoints for both PowerShell and Bash.
  • Offline, dependency-free operation suitable for secure agent environments.
  • UTF-8 BOM-safe PowerShell scripts for Windows PowerShell 5.1 compatibility.
  • Built as an Openclaw Skills-ready notification primitive for reusable agent workflows.
